A better solution for the Deal of the Day threads.

I've always enjoyed Bill's and now Yangdu's continuing posts as the sale threads evolve. There's a shared presence. The owners are with us. Even a good idea, if it shrinks that participation, may not in the end turn out to be such a good idea.

Some supermarkets are very efficient. They use the latest computer programs to monitor supply and demand. They call them, "Walmarts"

(I'm not against the 'SOLD' flags on the intro post, but it may not be win-win.)

I am repeating a post that I made on another thread, sorry but they appear to be sort of the same topic...

There is some merit to the idea of notice. I had thought you posted on the thread your intent to buy then send the email to Yangdu and then payment, first come first serve and you would not have several people sending emails at the same time for the same item.

But it apears thats not how it works . The email sent notice is posted after its already bought. I would think first to post notice should be the one who buys and then payment should be made within a certain time limit say 15 mins or it goes back up.
Its still a shark feast though it would also be a little less hetic for Yangdu getting less emails to answer. I wonder how many times she has to write back sorry its gone!

hehehe...lots...unfortunately too often, it's to me. The worst part is Dave gloating though... ;)

You know, it's worth considering...Bill was a very smart man and this is the way he did it. He knew all of this, too.

No, that doesn't mean we can't have change, but it is worth wondering about.

I like things the way they are. I check the DOTD threds even when I know perfectly well that I'm broke. The conversation is informative, and many times it has steered me toward what khuk I might want to acquire next.
I think it is an excellent balance of competitiveness and the fellowship that is one of the hallmarks of the Cantina.

Maybe we have just had too many requests for change in the past few days. Spark deleting old threads. Silly ideas for automated notifiers. Ideas to change the way the DoTD thread is run. Calls for price hikes.

I'm not going to worry about it anymore. In the end, however the deal thread is run, it's fine with me.

The DOD are a blessing. Everyone wins. Unless you're trying to beat Nasty to a blade. HI is offering more variety, more beauty than I've ever seen.

I would like the status of the blades for sale to be updated in the initial post. It's just a problem w/ my connection, so it doesn't affect others, but it can often take me a few minutes to get a whole page and the pics to load, and I have to see each of Yangdu's posts to see which ones are gone.

I send the email, then post immediately after that I sent an email as a courtesy to Yangdu and any other interested buyers. I appreciate it when others post that they've sent an email too. As far as I know this isn't a rule but I believe that it's helpful to others more often than not.

The system is not perfect. Occasionally several people will wind up "racing" on a particular item for a variety of reasons. Sometimes Yangdu has more than one and everyone wins. Other times, not.

Some mail servers are faster than others. I've been told that email from one AOL user to another is essentially instantaneous, giving AOLers an advantage over the rest of us. Fine with me.

The chitchat? I just scroll through, looking for "email placed on" and "xxxx is gone." It only takes a moment and when I get to the bottom and I haven't seen anything saying that my next perfect khukuri is gone, I consider that a go-ahead to send an email. If it is gone...well, maybe I'll get the next one.

When I first got here folks explained to me that my khukuris would find me and not vice versa. It took me a while to realize the truth of this. There have been numerous instances where I just missed my dream purchase, only to have one literally fall in front of me later.

I believe that the path is more fun than the destination sometimes. Regardless, Yangdu is doing us a real favor with these DOTD's and I'll support her efforts, however she feels like doing it.

Those prices on the website ain't half bad either...;) (Finally sprung for a 22" GRS, if anyone's curious. Let's hope this one's not after my fingers.)

Lest we forget, it's worth checking the Knife Exchange here occasionally. I've scored a few of my favorites (chiruwa YCS, hasiya, antler handled KK, villager WWII) there, all at discounted prices.

Honestly, though? I like the chaos and luck involved with the present DOTD's. Sometimes it's nice not to have to wait in line, you know?

email sent - with gentle suggestion attached. let's see what happens....

Yangdu recieved quite a few letters. She is open to this forum and wants to please. I think it's great.
