Okay, I am a pretty nice guy and am pretty trusting of people who are nice to me on a consistent basis.

So, there is a knife shop I got to on a VERY regular basis. I have spent MORE than 2k over the last two years. May not sound like much, but it is a nice chunk of change.

I have gone in to buy some slippies over the past week and on BOTH occasions, he charged me WAY more than I could have bought them for AND he lied to me about the blade steel on one.

On a Moore Maker 5201 trapper, he 'made me a deal' at 100.00. Come to find out, you can buy the damn knife for less than 60 bucks online with 5 bucks in shipping.

The other was a Schatt and Morgan that he 'made me a deal' for 90.00 and the knife was 60 online.

Needless to say, today was the last sale he will make to me. I hate being made to feel like a sucker and he pretty much took advantage of what I thought was a burgeoning friendship and a mutually beneficial business relationship.

On the bright side, you did get to handle the knives and get a look at the fit & finish. There are no cutlery stores near me so I get to roll the dice and order on line.

I had the same thing happen at a camera shop. I felt like crap for a couple days because I had been taken but I chalked it up to a lesson learned. If I didn't feel that I was getting a good deal at the time, I wouldn't have bought it. When you bought the knives, you probably thought they were worth every bit of what you paid.

Do like the Busse folks. Cry once then don't look back. No regrets.

It is a pretty cool knife and I am sure it will last a lifetime.

Take the knife back for a refund. Assuming you haven't had it too long or used it.
 
I never buy a knife at store the first time I see it. I'll handle it for sure...but I'll go home and look it up first before buying. I'll go back and tell the dealer I can get a better deal online and they will almost always drop their prices quick. I'll pay a little more to walk out with the knife that day..but not that much. Don't let yourself get ripped.......

If it was me....I'd find another knife this guy has you want....find out what the online price + shipping is and go make this guy work for the sale. I'd tell him you know he got the best of you at least twice and if he values your continued business..he'd better make it up to right now.

A lifetime?
If taken care of, your grandchildren will treasure that MM Trapper. If they have any respect for their grandfather, they'll use it with pride instead of sticking it on the shelf.

You spent a bit more than you had to but in the end, you did alright. Enjoy your latest acquisitions and be happy in the knowledge that you can afford to spoil yourself once in a while.

You obviously didn't buy them to sell them later and turn a profit. You bought 'em because they were what you wanted.

Congrats (again) on the new knives.

I guess I don't exactly agree with going into your local blade shop, handling the merchandise, asking questions looking at the manuals etc., then finding the cheapest guy selling it online out of his garage, then going back and extorting your local guy to make the deal. Market economy yes, but give me a break! And no, I wouldn't pay an extra 40% or 50% either, but if I wanted to be sure of the EXACT model that I was getting, and I knew that any service/warranty issues would be handled face to face, then absolutely that is worth more $$$.
 
You cant really complain. Its your job to find out prices online first or ask around. I never go to a knife store without knowing what im getting into. Such as spyderco delicas that go for 75 at my local store and para milis and manix go for 180 plus. Gotta do your research buddy.
 
I have had a few good purchase experiences and a few bad ones at knife stores. I bought a folder knife that had a mat finish on the blade. after the first day of carrying the knife it had rust all over one side but not the other never got a spot of rust. I took it back for an exchange showing the knife dealer that the finish on one side was not as good on one side as the other. He told me "oh, a little rust is ok, go away." well, the other side of the knife never rusted in 3 years never a spot of rust on the side with the good finish, but the other side rusted every time I forgot to put some lube on it. I never went back there. What made it worse was I am sure that the factory would have just sent me another to make me happy, but the dealer would not even talk about it. never bought there again (that was like my 5th purchase from him)
 
the only person ya can blame is yourself for not doing your homework on prices prior to purchase, i have done the same thing myself, i wont pay more than 20% or so for the honor of handling stuff pre-purchase, most knives have excellent F&F nowadays and if it isnt 100% the maker (ie BM, spyderco, EKI, etc) will usually gladly fix it or replace it for little if anything, FWIW there is a small knife shop near me which is usually about 10% or so over net prices which i can live with.
 
You can almost always buy cheaper online because there is less overhead and upkeep to thier business. The knife shop has to pay rent/lease/mortgage on the building, pay ad valorem taxes, business licenses, has to pay someone to be there, clean up, maintain inventory, etc...

All a website really has to do is keep up the website. They can have merchandise drop-shipped from another supplier, so they don't even have to maintain a physical inventory. You can do it from your house.

It brings the prices down for us, but sadly, it makes it hard for the small shop owner. New technology always has two faces.

I appreciate your non-condescending response. I do agree that it is a NICE knife and I plan to carry it today for the first time. I spend a lot of time caring for my knives, so I am sure you are right that it will last several lifetimes.

The whole point of thread was the poster felt like he was being ripped off. It's not extortion to expect a FAIR price. The only reason any retail outlet sells products at insane markups is because people continue to just stroll in and slap cash down without the slightest clue as to real value. I can show you dealers that mark their knives up above the manufacturers retail price. I also said I would pay more for being able to handle the knife and take it home that same day.
 
I can honestly see where everyone is coming from on this. I am OK with paying a bit more for at brick and mortar to be able to handle the knife. I am NOT OK with someone lying to me and using our congenial relationship to get me to pay way above the retail price of the object.

I run a business that does 2.5 mil a year in sales and I believe I have increased my sales by more than 50% year over year because I treat my customers right and provide a quality service at a reasonable price.

Regardless, he has lost my previously sure to be manytimes repeated business. 40.00 cust him thousands in the end.
