A Bit Disenchanted With CPM 440V

I get it, General. If you remove material from one side without removing enough material from the other, you end up with something resembling a mini-chisel grind.

So, if I understand you correctly, if it shaves better in one direction than the other, you need to remove material from the side that faces down (when shaving good). Or conversly, you need to remove material from the side facing up when it doesn't shave well. Is that right?

Essentially you are grinding away the "flat" side of the mini-chisel edge. Tell me if I've got it backwards.

I just got a Military, and I haven't had to sharpen it yet, but I'm getting the feeling that I should save a copy of this somewhere so I can find it later. I'm sure I'll need it. Sure would be nice if some of this knowledge was added to the FAQ...

Hi General I’ve tried it your way, but it seems to me that it must be the other way around. Like mgeoffriau says “So, if I understand you correctly, if it shaves better in one direction than the other, you need to remove material from the side that faces down (when shaving good). Or conversely, you need to remove material from the side facing up when it doesn't shave well. Is that right?”
This seems to be the opposite of what you are saying.
I have made a little drawing to make things clearer :

#1 is how a razor blade is set (except for the top part of the blade) so this side will shave better than #2 but you are saying if this side shaves better, sharpen the opposite side, wich will lead to even more of a chisel grind. I think mgeoffriau is correct that you sharpen the side that shaves well, as that will be the chisel ground edge.

Wow this is harder to explain than I thought.

I will try again, sorry guys, if I had the knife in front of you I could explain in 30 secs, honest!

Let me see...

1st things FIRST, VERY IMPORTANT this as ALL using the RIGHT HAND!!!! If you use the LEFT it is REVERSED!

Picture 1 shaves better when the face side shaves down the arm, ok? What is happening is the longer bit is acting like a chisel and is doing the shaving. Of course a chisel edge is twice as sharp as it is half the angle. If when you shave you can NOT see the clip you are on the front side.

Picture 2 is what happens when the clip side shaves better up down the arm.

What you want to do is remove the bit that is 'hanging over'. So to recap, if you have an edge that shaves well going down the arm and not as well up the arm you have picture 1 and want to sharpen the CLIP side until both are equal.

If you find it works best UP the arm you have picture 2 and you want to take a bit from the face side. Easy peasy!

This is of course asuming the knife is in the RIGHT hand and the clip is on the finger tips side ( the side you cannot see when you hold the knife) Look at the Spyderco Military. Face side has no clip, clip is on the 'other' side with NO markings on the blade.

Wow! I sure hope this helps a bit!

I think we probably all understand this intuitively, it's just incredibly hard to describe it. In any case, sharpend one side, if that doesn't work, sharpen the other and see what happens

How about we get together and sort this out...lessee here, Wales....Indonesia....Mississippi....hmmm, how about a nice resort on Hawaii? Does that work for you gentlemen?

Heck yes! Hawaii sounds great. Who will pay for the flights?
