Recently my young fella turned 14. Whilst I got him a (non knife related) present for him on the day (kids and their video games!) I also decided that being 14 now, a young man, he deserves a gift befitting a young man. So I got him a BK11. He has a job as farm hand at a dairy/soy farm (weird combo:confused:) so I thought a handy little tool would be.. um.. handy.

That's an ESEE pouch I modified lightly to fit the stock sheath.

The TDI pocket clip.

It doesn't really show up very well but in the above pic you may notice that I covered the top of the tin with 1200grit paper as a hone to keep his blade a-hair poppin'. Stuck it down with industrial strength double sided tape.

I made the tin as a small first aid kit instead of the typical fire kit. There's Band Aids, anti-bac cream, burn gel, alco swabs and splinter probes.

You can just see the side of the lower eyelets in the ESEE pouch in this shot. Unfortunately they didn't line up with the sheath so I used my soldering iron to melt some holes to match up to the holes at the bottom of the sheath. Took about as long as the soldering iron takes to heat up.

And now for the piéce de rèsistance.. the TommytheWho scales. They're made from Ipe. They feel amazing in the hand. Simply beautiful..

This is the kit on my belt.

And, my favorite way of carrying it, clipped into the fob pocket of my jeans.

I've EDC'd this for several days like this (fob pocket) and let me say, it is so comfortable. Doesn't poke anywhere it shouldn't even when sitting. So much so that I went to the shops one afternoon and forgot to take it off. I got half way up the escalators at the mall and realised I still had it on. I very quickly and thoroughly crapped myself envisaging a heavily armed SWAT Team descending on my position (this isn't entirely exaggerating either) so I covered it with my shirt, ran the wrong way down the escalator and put in the car. Just for the folks that don't know, I live in Aus where's it's HIGHLY ILLEGAL to have any sort of blade on you in public. Phew. Disaster averted.

I absolutely love this little set up and am going to make one for myself with a BK24 and Tommy scales and a fire kit in the tin. I may utilize a TekLok so I can carry it scout method though, to be honest, the clip almost seems more versatile (clips on to a belt and into pockets).

I would like to say thank you to Tom for these beautiful handles. They are truly magnificent. Mate you WILL be getting more of my money soon!

Thanks for looking folks. Hope you like it as I hope my young bloke does too.. All the best wonderful people..

Springy..

Looks good Springy! great utility to have while hes working!

Great gift ... I still have the first knife my dad gave me and I still carry it on occasion ... its one I'll have all my life.

Thanks brother. I hope he finds it as useful as I would..

Great present , lucky son :) my dad hates the fact I'm a knife Knut :(

I have the same problem mate. Unfortunately the 'weapon' stigma seems to overcome the blatant fact that we see them as tools. Sucks hey..

Thanks bud. I hope Callan keeps this one for life too. I know it'll last that long, I just hope the little bugger doesn't lose it!

Awesome gift Springy. I'm sure he loves it and it'll get lots of use at his job site. Good idea making up a FAK in the tin; I'm sure it'll get a lot more use than a standard fire kit like you said. Nice to see younger kids getting exposed (properly) to knife use. Onya! [emoji106]

Thanks Aiki! Yeah I thought the FAK would be more appropriate than the fire kit. Unless he needs to burn the whole crop of soy beans to the ground!

Hey Bee Kay......

The honor is all mine my friend! I know he'll love it and I can't wait to show him the rest of the line up (unfortunately he doesn't live with me). I have a feeling the next one he'll choose is the venerable BK15. And I'll be happy to get him one (plus another one for me :D)

Thanks Uncle Ethan!

I thought you Aussies all carried big knives a la Dundee..haha But seriously can I be your adopted son? I'm only about 2.5 x the age of your son, but still...

Nice looking kit! Very thoughtful gift for your young man as well. I would agree the FAK is way more likely to be used than a fire kit.
Given knife laws there, will he be able to carry it at work? Is it just public spaces that are off limits?
Not a lot of folks in my world understand that knives (of the EDC and large camp variety) are tools, either. Unless it's in the kitchen knife block, that is.

Very cool setup, that bk11 is dressed out nice, really like the sheath and pouch combo. You've gone above and beyond with putting all that together, elegant but still k.i.s.s.

Gave my boy my bk11, just waiting on the micarta scales and tdi clip to arrive.

That's a kool little kit, I hope it serves your son well
Thanks brother :)

Yep, no worries. Welcome aboard.. Son. :D

Nice rig, your son should be proud.
He's a good kid. I'm sure he'll use it with pride..

Thanks GSOM. These knives definitely do need little FAKs especially if you're me! Yes he'll be fine to carry it around the farm, it's a private property. There will be a note included in the package making sure he knows that it's for the farm/camping only. He's an avid camper as well so I know he'll love it. Will go great with the Swag and the SAK I've bought him previous years.. Yes, unfortunately the 'oh my god that guys massive knife could stab someone's face off!' stigma that gets attached to knives really sucks. Our government has done a pretty fine job of making that thinking the norm over here. And although they're illegal, knife crime steadily rises here. Go figure..

Thanks Cold One. As you can see from the pics the pouch almost fits, just required a little 'persuading'. Makes a handy addition and doesn't cost much.
Funnily enough, initially I was going to buy the Micarta scales for it then went with the Tommys. Due to the length of time it all took to get here, I'd forgotten exactly what I bought. Expecting the micarta, I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened the package to discover those beautiful Ipe scales. Sometimes it rocks when your memory sucks :D

Wow man, not only did you set up your son with some high quality gear, but you really put some thought and creativity into the overall package. He's lucky kid!

Oh man, i hope my dad does this to me too, my parents are fully against me being a knife nut. I'm sure your son would love the gift!

Thank you gents, I appreciate the kind words. I've been thinking about it for a while, basically when he told me he got a job as a farm hand. Just had to wait until the right occasion.

My oldies aren't too keen on my hobby/passion either Kev. But what I said to my ma once was, "yeah you're right ma, I should get another hobby. So what do you reckon: Heroin or Meth?". When I said that to her she very quickly back peddled. Then dad piped up, "at least he's buying quality knives Shannon. KA-BARS. Yep". I was very proud.
