Hello all,

As my appreciation for knives has grown, so has my desire to include my wife in the fun (I have already done this successfully with firearms and let me tell you, it is MUCH better to have her on the same team). Anyway, I was wondering if any of you guys out there have done the same thing with your wife/girlfriend? Although she says she is afraid of knives, she has become more open to having one now that she has been out running in the evening. I suppose the best idea would be for me to go with her too but I am always on this dang forum! She likes the idea of a finger hole (i.e. emerson la griffe) and weight is obviously a factor as well…oh yeah, and not to mention her request of, “a cute one?” if all that is possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

p.s. I bought her a CS urban pal but the sheath’s retention was so poor that the knife was lost the first day it was on her key chain!

Your title had me confused. I was getting ready to welcome you to the club :D

I try to wait until my g-friend comes home to open my new knives, if I can stand it. She was TOTALLY unamused at first, but now gives a semi-decent input on design(girly input that is). It has taken months of showing her knives I want, and she still has minimal appreciation, but I'm still trying. I have however taught her the value of actually carrying a blade. Right now she is carrying a cheapie ~$30 that I gave her. She has it every day on her pants, just like I do. I want to buy her a BM 921. It's her favorite knife of mine, but spending $100+ on a knife that I don't think she'd appreciate as much as a necklace is a hard decision.

I do think getting your girlfriend/wife at least amused by our hobby is a neccesity! At least that way, when the UPS man shows up every week, they don't refuse to sign for our new knives!:D

I always like to buy the "big and small" of knives that I like, then I let my wife think that I got the small one for her ;). (SOG Tigershark, Seal 2000...Becker BK-9 Combat Bowie, BK-7 Combat Utility...Spyderco Police, Delica...SOG PowerLock, Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier)...:D.

Have you considered a Spyderco Delica or Endura, or maybe one of the hawkbill designs, along with a neck sheath? The cute requirement could even be fulfilled if you can find one of the ones with a colored handle. I think the neck sheaths are available through 1sks, or at least they used to be. I know the sheathmaker was Mike Sastre, you should be able to turn it up on a search if you're interested. Don't forget the Spydie SPOT either, it was designed for self defense from the get go too. It's funny you should bring the subject of protection while running up, I just finished reading an article on the subject it Runner's World magazing this morning. It suggested using pepper spray, and also running with a dog if that's an option. I like the idea of a dog; it would take a really ballsy criminal to attack a woman out jogging with a Great Dane  . They have a website www.runnersworld.com if you want to check it out. Good luck in your search!

She shoots guns, but she's afraid of knives??

I dunno...go through one of the on-line catalogs and see if she likes the looks of anything?
Benchmade seems to be making more "cute" knives lately, between the Benchmites and the splash colors.
I bet there are still pink Delicas floating around, if you ask for one on Exchange.
Don't overlook SAKs. They will be used more than any other 3 knives you could get her.

She doesnt want one now at 16 because she is scared she will forget about it and bring it to school(god I hate zero tolerance and no knife policies), but she is definitly becoming interested in knives, and has already picked out which knife she wants(but is unsure on the color yet). She picked this knife after I purchased my new mini griptillian in od green with the thumbstud. She really liked the axis lock due to ease of use(scared of closing liner locks one handed due to fingers coming under the blade) but thought the color was really ugly. I went to the benchmade website and her eyes lit up when she saw the assortment of colors. Im fairly sure that in two years she will be getting a griptillian in yellow or blue for her 18th birthday, and a leatherman squirt and juice from myself and her other brother(Murnax) for high school graduation. Next step will be getting her hooked on bladeforums as she already listens to my brother and I as we discuss daily threads that caught our interest.

Long story short, you might want to take a look at a benchmade griptillian in a cute color with a thumb hole.

Badguy,
You are not alone. My two year old loves knives. He has to have one at meal times ( we give him a cheese spreader), picks out which pocket knife I will carry most days ( he likes slip joints) and took the sheath to my airforce survival knife to use with a rubber knife that came in a army playset. He also freaks out when he sees my SAK Classic and asks to have his nails filed with it. I love it, my wife finds it a little odd but is ok with it.

Taken the day he was born. (one year ago last week)

:D

One heckuva tough kid too. His older brother pounds on him constantly and he just laughs it off. Didn't cry when he got his shots. In fact, the only time he cries is when he's hungry and watch out! Kid's got some lungs.

Anyway, to answer your question: Yes. I finally got my wife a knife. Actually, a few since then. Here are 2 of her favorites:

Still hasn't latched onto the idea of "Big Knives" - khukuris, etc. But hey, I definitely appreciate what I got.

I would consider the Kershaw Chive or Leek with the rainbow finish. They are relatively inexpensive and have a very unique appearence. I plan on getting a Chive for my spouse and a Leek for myself. Kind of a his and hers deal. Good Luck.

Pendentive and SPHayes. Glad to see I am not alone!! We will supply the knife weilders of the future :)

My wife deals ok with my knives, most of the time. I have given her a scallion, buck quest, kershaw gentelmans knife with rosewood handles, two sak's, and an inexpenisive orion folder. She does not care for large folders, but on our last camping trip she told me she wanted a larger folder!!!

get her a spyderco delica!! It makes a great intermediate one handed folder between small and large!!! ;)
