a blade for my baby

She carries either a Blackout or a Chive. Although just last night she started to express an interest in my "little" 12" sirupati. I might end up losing a khukuri.

Hey anewguy,

I'm glad to see that your mrs. has taken an interest in your hobbies/passions. My ex despised my love of sharp pointy things, she didn't understand at all. She once even asked me to use my Bud Nealy Pesh Kabz to cut veggies! But for personal protection while out jogging and such, you may want to consider some pepper spray or OC sprayers. ASP makes some very good ones, the Key Defender and the Palm Defender. The spray canisters in the Key Defender can be switched to inert ones so that she can practice using them without gagging you.

Bad Guy, SPHayes and Pendative,

It's good to see that some of the youth are getting a proper edge-ucation.

If your interested in self defense while she's jogging I would go for a fixed blade neck knife. Simply because she may not be interested enough in practicing opening a folder for it to become second nature. Its weird, I can open and close every folder I have with either hand, but hand it to someone else and they fumble with two hands to open it and can't close it at all.
If you get her a small fixed blade, she'll only have to grab it from the sheath, so it won't matter as much if she never touches it other than when she's running.
Get her small folder to use for everyday type stuff too, one of the small spyderco's would be good. She'll be hooked before you know it.

Hey all,

It sounds like we may all be on the same track. A number of you suggested a mini-grip in various colors. The bright green one was on her possibilities list, but I must admit that 80(ish) dollars for that knife when I… I mean, she, could get something a bit more substantial for a couple of bucks more made me give that knife a second guess. Someone else suggested the chive or leek in the rainbow finish and although that one was on her list too, I felt that the lock may not be strong enough (nor blade long enough) for it to work very well as a defense weapon, not to mention the time it would take her to take the thing “off safety” before flicking it open—remember, she is already a bit scared of knives, I don’t jogging with that thing ready to go would be the best idea. (this is not to discount the chive at all, I personally own one, and love it, but not as a first choice weapon).
The idea of pepper spray may be a good way to go, but the fun thing about knives is that…well, I don’t have to tell you guys. We are leaning along the lines of a fixed blade “neck-knife” (for similar reasons that Matt gave) rig but still shopping!!!
Oh yeah, stripy357, thanks for that link, those look like some great ideas, I’ll have to look into them some more.
Thanks again for your ideas,
