A boy's first knife?

Although my first knife was also SAK, the lack of locking mechanism in most is probably a concern, at least for me.

Being a spyderfan my top option would be a dragonfly although it's outside the budget.
It's small, reliable, lightweight and has a finger choil.

Kershaws are pretty good option I think.
Cryo
OD-2

Safety education for himself and others is extremely important I think.

Kamp King is my choice for my daughters first knife, it was my folks choice for my first knife, and my dads first knife.
Easy to sharpen so he can learn how to freehand(and sharp knives are safer as we all know), cheap enough to lose if you ebay one ($6 or so shipped) and easy to pull the scales off if you want to paint them blaze orange or whatever. Carbon steel so lil dude learns knife care, two handed opener so less threatening, other cool tools (actually pulled the kids KK out last night to use the awl). Non locking but better to learn how to use one early (I bought a CRKT Edgie 1a few years ago, non locker. That damn thing bit me more than any other knife I ever owned because I got complacent with having a locker. That, and the lil bastard is as sharp as my straight razors.)
