A British Barlow

I had an Ablett Barlow at one time. It did look quite nice even though the finish in places was not perfect, it had a small gap between the scales and the liner, but what finally made me get rid of it was I just couldn't get a good edge on the blade. :grumpy:

Meako - Nice little gathering, but I wonder about the knife you mention, if the bolster is really big enough to make it a barlow in the strictest sense?

That's why they stamped BARLOW right on it-- to remove ambiguity. ;)

Oh yeah, absolutely :suspicion:

When I was ordering the lady on the phone had to apologise because, the new, more rounded handle didn't have the stamp (as pictured on their site). She seemed surprised when I gave a 'thank goodness, its tacky' response.

Thanks for the pics, Thom. :)

Especially the size comparison to the Webermesser is pretty helpful. The contours on the handles are really great looking and nicely unique. Until now, I´ve just got good/very good knives from Sheffield, England. But it´s great to see, that this kind of knife is still made nowadays.

Your pics are great and clear - thanks for the great shots!

Looks like a really nice one! Thanks for showing it; glad to see such good work still coming out of Sheffield. I'll be interested to hear your opinion on the quality of the blade steel, after you've had a chance to use it for a while.

Me too. Has it sharpened up well?

Just an update: I've now convexed the edge on this knife as the edge it came with was too obtuse for my likening, and I am really very partial to this type of edge on a full grind/ground blade.

It took a couple of tweaks to get spot on, but now I'm happy to have this in the pocket and confident it'll cut and cut well.

Time will tell how well the edge holds.

A handsome little knife. I like the waisting of the handle; it looks very comfortable to hold. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to get the edge where you want it.

The knife sure looks good; I'll be interested in hearing how it holds up in real-life use (edge retention, joint stability, etc.).

Thanks for this thread.

Looks like the blade is shorter than on a typical new American barlow. Is that because of UK laws restricting the length of blades?

For a minute, I thought ScruffUK had returned from his travels!

The blade, from tip to the front of the tang, is just under 2 1/2". The same clip is in use by a number of Sheffield cutlers. I don't know if it's length has any relation to the UK knife laws or not, though UK sales would suffer I think, if the blade length was over 3".

That's a beautiful knife all right. If I had that one, I'd handle it so tenderly that it would slip out of my hands and clatter down a flight of stone steps in no time.

My Ulster, Camillus, and Queen are all 2.5".

Forgive me if this was mentioned and I missed it, but is the blade stainless or carbon steel? Also, what is the approximate price?

Carbon. Moderately inexpensive :)

Maybe the Ablett has a longer handle, not a shorter blade
These Barlows, Russell, Remington, and TC, have blades under 2.5" and handles under 3.5".

What is the Length of the Ablett handle?

What is the Length of the Ablett handle?

Both mine have a handle of 3 5/8".

Just comparing my Ablett Sheepsfoot Barlow and my Sheepsfoot Charlow, they're very similiar in size, but the Ablett has a slightly longer handle.
