A Buffalo Hunt With Bill Bagwell

Congratulations on your trophy, Joe !
And thanks for the truly amazing images and story.
Memories to last a lifetime.
You are a lucky man, and I know you like to write, tell us more.

Doug :)

What a great story. I really think that something like this would make an excellent magazine article.

Awesome story Mr. Paranee!! One of the hunts I would love to do....always wanted a buffalo coat.

So what was the caliber? 45-70 I would guess.....

I', digging this thread with a "Serving Size Spoon"....congratulations on your Bison, Sharps, and Bowie!

Incredible hunt Joe. Probably the closest I will come to hunting a buffalo. Feel free to post more of the details or pictures. I agree with Roger. Definitely worthy of publishing and probably better than most of the hunting i've seen on ESPN Outdoors!

Thanks for posting it.

Peter

The only other viable chance to harvest one of these magnificent creatures is from one of the numerous private herds in this country. The trick is to find a place that has a very large area and a healthy herd so you can kind of get the feel of what this stoic animal was like hunting back in the day.

Do you have the information on the particular ranch?

Joe,

That's a great story. Congratulations on your new trophy and rifle.

Guy's thanks so much for all the kind words.

I am out the door to get a tree for my kids and then back to work but when I have time I will post more details about the ranch and the load

It was .45-70

Thanks again

A hunting trip to cherish for a life time and great story Joe. Looks like you and Bill had a super time. Thanks for sharing brother!

I asked Bill to expand on the load we used
......................................................................................................................

Joe--The ammo was the culmination of the development of a black powder equivalent load I did for Black Dawge Cartridges. Powder Inc. purchased the Black Dawge ammunition line from Hogdon's after Hogdon bought Goex.

Black Dawge is bringing out a line of Vintage Cartridges for use in the old black powder cartridge guns. A requirement is that the ammunition must be non corrosive and have pressure levels that make it suitable for the old guns. It also must be accurate and effective on big game. This 45-70 load is the result of that effort.

It consists of a hard cast flat nosed bullet driven a bit over 1200 fps by the new Blackhorn 209 powder. Although I developed it, I don't think that I should go deeper into the specifics of the load, as there are some proprietary issues that may be involved. If any one wants additional information on the load or other Black Dawge ammunition they can contact Powder Inc. at (479) 705-0005 and ask for Jerry Dean. They have a lot of neat loads for a great many obsolete cartridges for those that don't reload.

Best, Bill

The name of the ranch is E L Ranch ran by Harrell Moore Jr.

His contact # is 936 824 2026

He is a first class guy and I would Highly recommend his services

one of my long time hunting partner's Brown Delozier is heading his way in a week or so.

They do not shoot many Bulls a year so the hunting of them is truly a management type deal so give him a call if anyone is interested.

Here is a pic of Bill , Harrell and myself

Great report, as usual. I'm not a hunter but really appreciate the use of traditional rifle.

We've been out in the Henry Mtns but did not see the herd. A friend was up there in Sept hiking with his son and some Mule Deer hunters showed him the herd through a scope.

Thanks for sharing the photo's Joe. That looks like the trip of a lifetime for a hunter. Since you are a fan of buffalo have you read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/American-Buffalo-Search-Lost-Icon/dp/0385521685

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in hunting or the history of the bison.

A great read.

Seeing that herd must be an experience of mystic proportion. Almost like history repeating itself.

Thanks for the photos Joe.

Great post! Thanks for sharing that and always nice to see pics of Bill and his work.

I haven't seen wild herds, but some years ago, I spent an afternoon in Yellowstone snowmobiling. When the snowpack is deep, the buffalo/bison use the same roads as the snowmobilers to get around.

It was pretty amazing to come face to face with a buffalo. They are HUGE. When seated on the sled, the buffalo absolutely TOWER over you. Their heads are enormous!

Joe,

Classic photos of a great time with one of the great guys.

The Sharps and the Bagwell (Bowie) look so right with the Bison.

Tell me we're gonna see you with a Buffalo robe!

John

John I am having the head and cape shipped to my taxidermy man . So we will have to see. He is getting mounted for sure thinking of hanging the Sharps and a pic of me and Bill under it.

Do ya think Paul Long will make me a jacket with the back skin:D
