A Busse--what's it really worth?

Cougar--

Thank you for your suggestion.

As I said, I already considered it and made my decision.

Sounds as if you are somewhat exercised. Please contact me off-forum if you have any specific questions. I'll be happy to discuss them with you.

I want to apologize to Will -- we've discussed the transaction in email and now I agree this is one time a post in TGBU isn't the right thing to do. It's not at all clear that the guy who sold Will the knife knew there was any problem with it and there would be no way he could make good and clear his name since Busse has already done it. Sorry about the rant.

I won't edit it out, though -- let it stand as a warning to others.

Thanks, Cougar. No apology necessary.

However, now I am a little concerned that your last remarks may seem contradictory to my original post about dealing with this seller. So at the risk of putting much more information out there than anyone really wants to know, here's an excerpt from one of the private e-mails I sent Cougar:

"I bought the knife from a young fellow-- from his style and vocabulary, maybe in his 20's-- who said he bought it at a show, from a booth selling Busse knives. He gave me the impression it was a Busse sponsored booth, but I don't remember him saying it was an official booth. When I e-mailed him about the shadow along the edge bevel, he told me he had inquired about it, and that Jerry told him he would have to see it to make an assessment. The seller never mentioned the shadow before selling it to me, saying only that there were no marks on the knife other than some scuffs from lopping off a few branches. So yeah, I think he should have mentioned the shadow. But I'm not sure he was anything more than a victim in this himself.

"I guess I could e-mail him again and ask him point blank if he had bought it from an official Busse booth, and if he or anyone else had made any modifications to it, but obviously, if he has concealed that up until now, he is going to continue to conceal it. And since I have no way to know for sure whether he purchased it from an official Busse factory booth, or from someone who just had a booth at a show, I don't know whether he was the original customer or a secondary customer. And I have no way of finding that out. Dave Robeson did say that he thought the knife was sold at a show. Obviously, the guy I bought it from could have been that buyer and could have concealed the tinkering. On the other hand, he didn't seem to me to have the knowledge or expertise to attempt something like re-finishing or re-beveling the knife.

"So I'm left really not knowing if the guy is a victim or a swindler. He should have told me about the shadow and the fact he contacted Busse about it, if that were true. But maybe he figured he was going to sell it anyway, and didn't have anything definitive from Busse that it was a flaw, so he may have figured why muddy the waters if he wasn't sure? Also, if he didn't buy it from Busse, he should have said so. But what if he didn't know the difference, or wasn't sure himself? I was never in a position to ask for my money back, because by the time I found out there had been tinkering, Jerry had already fixed it. So I can't say I complained about the condition of the knife and the seller refused to refund my money.

"I don't want to defend this guy, because I'm very suspicious of him. At the same time, he seems like a young fellow who really doesn't need the grief of being crucified on the forums if he got duped himself, and was just less than forthcoming about it with me. After the e-mail I posted publicly from Busse, I'm thinking if I reveal his name, he'll be marked in a way that could be very hard on him and give him a very black reputation-and possibly one that is undeserved in its severity."

Sorry if this is a waste of "band width". I will say, for all concerned, that this will be my last post on this subject. I think I've said everything of value I have to offer, and then some.

This is a pretty good story. Shows how far Jerry has gone/would go to keep his customers/clients happy. Great knives and great knifemaker.
