A Call For Wood!

With how long it takes me to finish knives, and how little tiem I manage to put towards it, these boards will be petrified before I can manage to use them up, evne the bocote, which I use the most. :) I'd be itnerested in what you can do with the tulipwood myself, as it has a nie color, but is really too soft for knife handles as is, unlike the others(Which I should have researched before I bought it, but I tend to go into Paxton Woods and just buy whatever loosk nie and isn't too expensive). Plus always happy to help out a fellow cantina member.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some information on the wood stabilizing techniques in the home workshop?

I'm trying to figure out how to stabilize blanks for custom gun grips and knife scales so most of the pieces will be relatively small. I've worked with some commercially stabilized woods and when consistent I really like the material.
Stabilizing the blank appears to be a more effective process than applying a finish after shaping the material.

Thanks for your help

lots of info available
search:
vacuum stabilize
vacuum stabilizing
especially in the bladesmithing forum here

basic ingredients are container (mason jar often)
vacuum source (reverse bike pump) with vacuum gauge
solution
wood or other material

vacuum draws out air & lets solution better impregnate material

MacHete - have an update for us?

Not much of one, I'm afraid. I have accumulated most of the components I need for an experimental vacuum/pressure chamber, but my energies of late have been directed toward my imminent move to WV. I can resume my work in earnest again once I'm there (As long as Peeps doesn't distract me too much.) ;)

When will you need to have handles for the village makeovers? I was under the impression that operations had largely shut down for the summer, but I can make that wood a priority if I need to.

no, no.....spend the time with Peeps....don't worry about me. Just wondering how things were going....keep us posted, ok?
