Awright friends, here's my dilemma:

There's this one little bitty three day easy going river trip I've been wanting to take for about five years now, and every dang time I think it's gonna happen, somethings come up- primarily my partners crapping out on me, standing me up and so forth. I mentioned it to one of my best friends last night, he already turned me down in freakin' FEBRUARY!!!

So....I've decided....SCREW IT!!! I'm going alone!!! I'm tired of waiting on my friends, and I'd rather be alone than with someone I don't know and trust.

I'm thinkin' it's a perfect justification to pick up a new khukuri...the whole one man in the wild drama excuse...might even fly with the wife... :D

So, what I want is basically the biggest, baddest, thickest, meanest choppinest one that can be swung with one arm, weight is not a concern, I'll be travelling a couple hundred pounds light, and it's not being hauled through the woods on my hip. I basically want something that can make an emergency fire and take care of sweepers ASAP.

So, what do y'all recommend?

Thanks in advance!

First of all RWS is you want to remember the movie "Deliverance" and if you ain't seen it run down to the video rental right now and watch it!!!!!  ;)

Then with the movie fresh in your mind get ahold of Uncle Bill or Yangdu and order yourself a really nice BGRS and it doesn't matter which BGRS you get because they are all really very nice!!!!:D  :D

I guarantee if you stay alert it will take care of any redneck cracker hillwilliam that wants to make you, "Squeal like a piggy."!!!!!

Besides doing anything else you ask of it.:D  :D

I would also recommend the Baby Ganga Ram Special (an awesome all-arounder) as a khukuri on a long canoe trip.

That being said, I once did a 3-day 68 mile canoe trip without one.

Sadly, I was only armed with a roll of toilet paper when I scared up a HUGE turkey- looked like a basketball with wings.

I almost, but didn't, throw the roll at the bird as it whoomp-whoomp-whoomped away....

And it WAS hunting season. And I did have stamps & permit.

The Baby Ganga Ram is one of my favorites.

I applaud your choice to go forward. I couldn't get my friends to hike in the desert with me. I went alone alot. Not safe- but being safe would mean I'd rarely or never get to go..

I'll be the odd man out here and say 16.5" Chiruwa AK. Still my all-rounder of choice. Relatively small, relatively light, and will take as much (or as little) work as is required. (And, if you do break it, it's got one hell of a warranty.)

Of course, if I owned a BGRS, I might very well be singing a different tune. Barring khuks <15" and >20", is it really possible to go wrong here?

You already know my recommendation. I've got 3 Bura's and a Sher of them. Only need one, but having a spare never hurt anything. ;)

Heck yeah I seen Deliverance! what kinda uncultured barbarian do ya' think I am? :D Come to think of it, my bein' from Georgia, admitting to spending alotta time on the Chattahoochee, my love of canoeing, and my ocassionally returning Southern accent could be the reason I can't get none of my buddies ta' go with me....

I'll have to look into the BGRS, and the Chiruwa AK...(still trying to learn all them different khuks)

Don't go alone.

Alaska + Rivers + Alone = HUGE potential for tragedy.

Anything you could possibly defend against with a knife will be deterred by 15-18 in size. Anything creature larger and you will just annoy it. :)

Be well and safe

I'm with Rusty on this one (what Rusty *really* meant;)). I'd go with a 16.5" WWII if you're 5'8" or under or the 18" WWII if you are over 5'8". I myself like the 18"er just because it was one of my first khuks and has never failed me in a camping situation. I also like the longer handle Kumar put on it. That gives it a variety of ways to wield it.

Thought the AK Bowie deserved an honorable mention here.

I do a lot of winter camping/mountaineering in NH & VT. One of my biggest problems over the years was friends bailing on trips. Always last minute too, one time when I got to his house at 5am to pick him up! Absolutely infuriated me.

So, I took some serious outdoor educational courses, got my WEMT (wilderness EMT) and started going by myself. I put safety first, at all times, and always leave a detailed agenda with a close friend I trust to take action if I don't call within the specified time. And then I stick to that agenda.

Maybe not the safest endeavor, but as Munk said, if he didn't go by himself, he wouldn't be going.

So I say GO! and have a great time! Just you and your khuks, and all those eyes watching you .....

I think you should try advertising in some like minded outlet and find someone to go with.

Course, when I was 20 miles from the highway in the Mojave I could be just as dead as thousands away in Alaska.

What Yvsa, what Munk, what Ad Astra, what Cliff said! ;) Sounds like fun to me but I'd take a gun too, and just use the khuk for chopping!

The river in question is about as safe as anything gets in Alaska, you can wade through alot of it, and easily toss rocks across to the other bank in most areas. It's only about a 25-30 mile trip as the crow flies, but it turns into two or three days if ya' stop for some fishing or whatnot.

Definitely have a firearm with me. Probably leaning towards my Scout Rifle so if I come across a spring Blackie, I got some meat for the freezer.

As far as the length of a khuk, I'm six foot even, have knuckles that darn near drag the ground, and uhmmm....well....I can handle heavy loads pretty decently.

As far as portaging, I'm definitely in luck, shouldn't have to go more than 75-100 yards on either end.

I'm definitely gonna have to take a closer look at all the suggestions thus far, especially BGRS

Thanks much for all the comments and suggestions!

The BGRS and UBE would be perfect for this kind of trip. :)
