A Certain Gravitas - the Ebony Opinel!

I love ebony, and love Opinel's: the only reason why I never got one, is because the smaller available size (and probably the only one) is the #8...that's why I chose a rosewood #6:

I'm surprised that many of you guys were not aware of the "exotic" wood Opinel series. But, maybe, this is one of the few occasions when living on this side of the Ocean has a little advantage

I just wish the exotic wood was available for the carbone blades.

Would be ok to just deal with the beech used on the carbones but the stuff is just so darn hard to stain.

May have found the secret weapon though. Latest one (a #8) just got a bath in brown Rit dye. We'll see what happens when I put the top coat later tonight.

I've seen the exotic wood Opinels before, and they look (and feel) fantastic.

However, for me one of an Opinel's main draws is its rustic affordability, to which fine (Expensive) handles are at cross-purposes.

Not that I don't hanker for an olive wood and/or ebony all the same. ;-)

Are we talking about one of the ebonies or African blackwood? I believe these are separate species.

That Ebony posted by the OP is nice. Might have to pick one up before they're all gone.

The other day I saw opinel USA had a really nice looking burled olive wood N.8 in stock. I went back to the site last night to purchase it, and it was sold! Kicking myself for not jumping on it the first time I saw it. It was beautiful. If Anyone here bought it and sees this post (doubtful), I would love to buy from you if you ever decide to sell it! This is by far the best looking one out of all the premium woods I have seen.

I was noticing the same #8, and that is a beaut! Just as well for me, as I have got to get started on Christmas! I had noticed some of these before but not in ebony and BRW!

The name ebony is often used when dealing with African Blackwood. Gabon Ebony has a particularly dense, waxy texture, almost like it's been buttered! Very rare these days.
The wood on mine is close to that, but has a pore structure like Blackwood. I honestly am not sure which it is!! There are other "Ebonies as well. The black wood GEC is currently using has a lot of brown in it. They are all beautiful.

Sorry you missed that Olive Burl, burnside!! That's a killer!

That Ebony is quite attractive IMO. As is the Olive Burl. I noticed that both feature Opinel's grand 12C27 Sandvik. With that being said I could see both sporting a Carbon steel blade as well with a dark established patina. All in all both are very cool knives.
