A change in views

Well it seems that it wont let me post the pics, yes I'm using the right HTML coding. So here are some links instead.m I am thinking its a '90's, not that I am complaining at all. And man can I put an edge on these. On top of finding out what knives I like, I know for a fact that I get the most joy out of free hand sharpening, and I can put the best edge on a knife that way. This edge is crazy.

It looks like it, and if you look after it your Grandson will also get to enjoy it.

The first one of those that I had was the one I stole from my uncle in the 70's, I still remember the boot up the backside that I received as a reward for my industry.

Corey, let me work on those images and see if I can get 'em fixed.

Strange, I couldn't get 'em to work proper either but I've been having trouble with Firefox since the latest version came out.

Did you try
after the images in place of using url and /url ?

Ah, the Zen of freehand sharpening carbon blades. Another reason to go traditional.

First off, congratulations on starting college. The next few years will be an interesting and challenging time, and I applaud you for trying to improve yourself. As to your newfound focus, I understand. Most of my attention these days is taken by slippies. I don't think I could ever give up my modern one hand openers though, I like them too much. I think all knives are good assuming they are of quality of course.

Mine is a lot like that one, if not identical. (Kinda funky how the images of the shield & tang ended up reversed in a couple of those pics.) I also have a Primble/Belknap Hardware version of the 8OT that I bought as a spare, that has the older match-strike nick in the blade. There are a lot of great variations on these out there.

thx - cpr

There are a ton of great versions out there. I am looking at a couple on ebay that are going for pennies that I would like to try and get. And ya Blues, I did the
and nothing worked. Maybe it is firefox, its what I'm using too.

Oh and kamagong, I'll actually be a Junior. I just finished my first 2 at community college, working my way through and saving money. Now is just the first time I'm actually heading off TO college.

After seeing your location, I can only hope you are taking I-10 West to Tallahassee, not 301 South to Gainesville!!:)

I used to carry lots of fixed blades as I spent lots of time outdoors. If I wear a sheath knife around now, I get some funny looks from the "more cultured" ladies around my neighborhood. I've switched back to the slipjoints and haven't looked back. I have some stockmans, but the slimline and 4 line trappers work best for me.

Best luck in school, even if you are going South!

I don't need a fancy lock or uber thick blade. I need a knife that will be discrete in my pocket and will cut when I need it too.

Welcome to wide, wonderful world of folksy knives. Like you, I came back to old school slippies because it just occurred to me that these time-tested designs flat out cut stuff really really well.

Aha, do I detect a fellow Seminole?!

BTW, crbauhs - a bit of advice for the next couple years. Lay off the knife acquisitions while you're poor and in college. Get what you need (I'd say with that Old Timer, you're pert well there) and then use all your extra pennies not to acquire material possessions, but to buy beer, pretty things for pretty ladies, take cool camping trips, go to Mardi Gras, kayak the Econfina river .... in short buy some experiences! You'll have the rest of your life to acquire fancy pieces of steel. Best of luck to you.

mnblade, FSU class of 1992

PS: I have a confession to make - even though I'm a Seminole, I love Gainesville. Great town.

Just to show you the power of this forum===>
I had never HEARD of the term stockman
And then I found my dad's 8OT tucked away in a drawer
2077623122_1fa0bfdff5_b.jpg

It was in a little black sheath with a snap cover
I thought it was kind of odd that my dad would carry a stockman in a sheath
Then I read a post in this forum
About how in the western states (Colorado, Montana, Idaho, New Mexico, etc) that is how the "cowboys"/ranchers carried them
Then it all made sense
My dad really tried to relive the "cowboy" days of his youth even living in suburban Concord, CA :)
How did they wear their knives in Urban Cowboy? lol

Question:
Did the 8OT's and 34OT's ever come with a sheath??
My dad's is black and is stamped Maxxis or something like like
Prolly some Kmart sheath...hehehheheheh

You should set the trend at your new college and wear that puppy with a sheath
Don't let the PC police keep you from showing off your tradtional stockman
Maybe you could get a sheath with your school colors or mascot on it:cool:

It's funny how the collecting world works
I bought a 6OT Old Timer off of crbauhs a few weeks ago
It goes good with my brown, Delrin handled OT collection
It just went from one collector to another
It stayed in the pool of Schrade collectors
***********************************************
Tactical or traditional huh?
I like em both
Each has it's own utility value
But none of that damascus stuff!!!!
No cowboy ever carried a damascus blade:grumpy:
Not that I am aware of anyways.............:D

I do like the carbon steels of old though
Something about that grayish color that brings out thoughts of days gone by.....

While I'd hate to think it, depending on the institution that advice might put him in the jackpot. Why don't we let him make that decision for himself since the consequences would be his alone if it led to issues.

Yes, I'm a Nole and the wife's a gator. However, the son and daughter in law are both Noles!:):) I love my wife very much except for the last weekend in November!

I carried either a Buck Lancer or a Case medium Stockman everyday in grade school and then in Tallahassee. Of course this was before it became a crime to have even a plastic knife in school.

C, Nice to see you over in these parts.... I've been a diehard stockman fan for a while now.. I love the 37/8 -41/4 range.. Love that old schrade there..I'll be keeping my eyes out for one of those if you are looking for something similar with a bone handle you might look at german eye, boker tree, ore the case large stockman in cv..good luck in school and in your quest.
