Looking for a gift for a friend to introduce him to the world of knives.

Want to buy: an affordable (<$40) fixed blade knife with at least a 6" blade and no sawback. No other requirements, but for steel type I'd like to lean towards toughness over hardness (so, going away from stainless steel).

Benchmark: Cold Steel GI Tanto. I own it and it is an absolute mule of a knife. Looking for something a bit smaller and a bit cheaper.

Thank you very much!

Cheaper than a $20 G.I. and tougher and at least 6" blade but smaller? Can my answer be G.I. Tanto? It really is one of the best values in a beater for the skimpy cost.

Bushman from Cold Steel is $20 but thinner and longer.

Condor Rodan is a shorter drop point that seems a good value.

Mora.

Gerber Big Rock. 440B but still a good knife IMO.

What about a Buck Nighthawk 650? How much do they retail over there in the USA? Here in Australia I can tell you they retail for $180.

My sympathies mate. $39.

Oo, I just remembered. Glock field knife. $30 bucks. That's another good beater.

less then 40, Glock...or you could spend a little more and get a Becker, brutally strong

Any cheaper then $40 in a woods knife 6+ inches and your going to be buying something not worth buying. So either spend at least enough to get a ka-bar short bowie or something similar or don't waste the money at all.

Cold Steel is competitive in that price range. Not bad knives. You just have to ignore the 300lbs man in a spandex suit slicing open bags of meat like a badass. :D

The Condor Rodan ROCKS. Get that one. :)

I recently got a Rodan but haven't used it yet. It is a hefty knife with a 5" blade . It is made of 1075 carbon steel. I think it is well made and very sturdy. It comes with a pretty decent leather sheath,
It was not that sharp out of the box and I have put a better edge on it but i know it is not as sharp as it could be.
I think it will stand up pretty well to any kind of "normal" usage.

I got it basically as an introductory knife and think it is well worth the $25 I paid.

The Rodan appears to be be sharpened on one side (chisel grind? is that?) Is is beveled on both sides? Looks nice in pics.

Buck 119,for around $40 at Wally World(Walmart).It's 6"of Bucks,Paul Bos,heat treated 420HC.Yeah,I know it's stainless,but it's pretty tough stuff.

:thumbup::thumbup: ive dressed more whitetails with a 119, than probably any other knife except for a Buck 110

it wasnt sharp out of the box?

It was far from dull but it was not as sharp as the Buck paclite skinner, CS bushman and folding bushman or the KABAR dozier folder that I have gotten recently.

I am not very good at sharpening knives but it is sharper now than when I got it. I hope to give it a test in the next week or so.
