A cheaper shave.

It was time to buy cartridges for my Mach III last night---but I've been disgusted for some time of the high prices of the replacements----seems it wasn't all that long ago it was $5 bucks for 5 blades--now its like $12 for 4--and that's at Walmart prices.

Last time around I bought a bag of the Bic throw away's---cheap but they absolutely suck---so I bit the bullet and bought the Mach III's again---which brings us back to last night.

Standing in the razor aisle at Walmart again--scanning the prices of the replacements and just getting PO'd--I happen across the Personna M5 Magnum---5 blades in a cartridge--4 cartridges per pack--sub $6.

The handle and 2 cartridges also sub $6---so I take home a new handle and 6 blades for less than $12---which is still cheaper than a 4 pack of Mach III's------with the possibility of $6 replacements.

The handle comes with a decent travel case--cheap plastic but still decent---and is quite similar to the Mach III handle in "feel".

So I use it this morning--not quite as comfortable as the M3--could be growing pains from a different handle as I used the old one for YEARS.
I have a fairly heavy beard and it gave a decent shave for CONSIDERABLY LESS $$$-----even doing better on patch on my neck that the M3 would have a tough time getting smooth all the time.

Since this my first day using it---time will tell on how long the blades will last and whether its a true value or not---but at the moment I'm quite impressed for A LOT LESS $$$.

I think I've found my new shaving system.

About 9 months ago I did something similar.

I picked up the Personna Matrix3. Blades about 45% under the cost of my normal Mach3.

Loved it! I got a better shave than I did with the Mach3 and at a much better price! I felt like I had made a real discovery!

Trouble was, about 3 months later, no more Personna Matrix3 at WalMart. Has been replaced with the Magnum5. I had to go ahead and buy the Mag5 and after going through 7 cartridges, it doesn't give me the shave that the Matrix3 or even the Mach3.

I'm going to give it another chance (set of cartridges), but if it continues to disappoint, I guess I'll go back to the Mach3.

I was eying the double-edge blades, but they don't have any DE razors. I may have to order a Merkur just to try.

Good luck with your Personna.

Have you considered switching to a straight razor? After the initial investment, there is virtually no additional cost (shaving soap and cream last a long, long time).

I have used a good quality German "safety razor" but, finding replacement blades is difficult and expensive. I do get a good shave with it though. S&H on a blade order is killer though .. :( I quit using it when a 10-pack of blades cost $13 locally at the cigar shop which was the only place that had them.:mad::mad:

I think mine is the Merkur "Hefty Classic" Safety Razor. I like the longer beefier handle. If you buy one, be prepared for a few nicks that you never feel that bleed like crazy - it takes a little while for your hand to feel the edge after using a disposable razor and I think my skin toughened up a little too.

I have a Merkur Progress DE razor and use Feather blades. The feather blades are available through a number of sources on-line (Classic Shaving offers great customer service) and are scary sharp. You might want to work up to them through Personnas, but once you get used to using them you will never look back. Best shave at a bargain price with no multiple blade, moisturizing strip gimmicks. If you are going the DE route I recommend that you try a good shaving soap (Prorasso) as well.

Been using the M5 for about 6 months, shaving every other day. I just this past week bought my first pack of replacement blades, so 6 weeks or so for each blade? I like the results, especially at less than half price of the Fusions.

I don't use replaceable head razors (currently), but the last disposables I had (used last one the other day) were personna brand...dang good razors!

I've been using Bic disposables for years. Use each blade for a week. Might have to try the M5? But I hate it when they change models and you can't get blades! WD

You should seriously consider at least trying either a double edge safety razor or a good old fashion straight razor. If you look around online you can find packages of blades for a couple of dollars a piece. Brushes can be expensive, but you can find a Wilkinson Sword brush for ~$5 if you aren't sure about it yet and just want to give it a try.

Also heres a link to a great article on straight shaving

I use a DE razor. I'm also a member of shavemyface and badgerandblade (both dedicated to traditonal wetshaving). Razor was $12 (50s Gillette red tip) and my blades run about 17 cents each including shipping. Despite my love of blades, I haven't taken the straight edge plunge yet. DE shaving does take some getting used too. You need to get the correct blade angle and take it slow. Good face prep is important too.

Day 2:
Seemed more comfortable today on my face.

Caught some of the wild n wooly ones on the back of my neck and it did better than the M3---the longer hairs rinsed out easier than the M3 too.

Will get the clippers out and do a proper haircut in the next few days.

I use these too. They last at least a month for me.

I also used to get disgusted with the price of replacement blades, well I still do - but I read somewhere, could have been on here, about how important it is getting the razor completely clean and dry after each use. Now, as soon as I'm done with it, I go from rinsing under the faucet into a coffee mug of either rubbing alcohol or super cheap vodka (same thing??) anyway, give it a few shake in that then I tap the razor blades first into a bath towel probably about 40 times really quick. The idea is end up with a blade that is free of minerals and completely dry before you put it up. I would say it's almost doubled the amount of shaves I get before the irritation get's too bad. Of course change out the alcohol occasionally. I also read of others that leave it sitting in the alcohol, but that doesn't work very well with any type of blade with a strip on it.

Right there with you. Even Costco prices on the Mach 3 blades are ridiculous. I've got straight razors that I use on the weekends, but just don't have the time during the week. Like others here, I've just ordered a classic DE Merkur with 100 blades, all for about the same price of a Costco pack of Mach 3 blades. From what I've read, the 100 blades should last me about a year.

So my new plan is using the DE for everyday, the straights when I have time, and the Mach 3's for traveling - you can't bring a straight or DE on a plane.

Cheap disposables do suck, but no-one needs a 5 blade razor. Any more than 3 is a gimmick. I've been using Schick Extreme 3 for the past ten years and they work very well.

The blades are expensive but a pack of Mach III blades that costs around $30 at KMart (I want to say a dozen) last me for months. I get about 2 weeks from one cartridge. Since I shave every day thats not bad.

I do have a goatee so I don't have to mess with the chin and moustache and can probably get away with a duller blade than folks that have to shave those tender parts.

Has anybody tried that "razor sharpener" that I saw adverstised a while ago? It looked like little stropping thing that supposedly honed your blades.

Thing is--at less than half the price of the M3--who cares how many blades are in it.

PS Day 3---Workin like a champ.

And a few "safety razors" for those hang over/travel times.:)

+100 on this....

i started using shick extreem 3 throw away razors for my dome as the curve speeds up the process... ran out of blades 4 the gillette one day and used one... a great shave, long lasting blades and alot cheaper...

keep in mind this is coming from a guy who had to shave twice a day in boot to keep the angry gods happy, and my scruff has not gotten any thinner over the years... best product i've used in a long time
