What the Chinese are calling 440C has been changed now on the newer knives. My Cara Cara is also marked 440C. I understand the new ones have "8Cr13MoV" stamped on the blades. That is what the steel is and if you look it up it is very similar to the Japanese AUS8A as Wwells already pointed out.
For what its worth, I was playing with the Storm II last evening in my shop and using my file set that I've had for years. These files are different hardness files used to determine the hardness of steel to a rough approximation. For example a file at 60Rc doesn't scratch the Sandvik blade of my Kershaw but a 62 Rc file does so that kind of tells me that the steel is actually above 59 Rc. That is the easiest way I know to check it without actually having a Rockwell tester. None of my 50 Rc files would even so much as ding this blade.
