After a healthy dose of good Bourbon and pork tenderloin Friday night Sonya and I decided to head up to the skyline shelter and have a little camp out. It was a full moon and -3 degrees by 230am. The shelter is just over 4000ft and sits right on an alpine lake. Thought I would share some pictures and details. It's a little over a 4 mile hike one way to the cabin.

The 8 mile unmaintained road to the trailhead (not bad now but get's pretty much un- passable in mid winter) That's why I have a big jeep :)

The cabin (no heat or stove just a cold shelter!)

just starting to unpack the maxpedition falcon 2 it's perfect size for a light winter overnight. Probably way to small for most but I don't need a lot.

My wet shirt I took off once I got to the cabin, frozen almost instantly! The thermometer on the cabin door read 8 degrees at 3pm.

I dehydrate my own food, this is some split pea soup I pulled out of the freezer I made and dehydrated a couple months ago. Nothing like a hot home cooked meal on cold night! My freezer is full of dehydrated food, I just use the left overs from dinner pop them in the dehydrator and it makes the best camping and hiking food. A dehydrator is worth it's weight in gold, mine payed for itself the first week I had it.

The next morning I was melting snow for water for the hike down. My buddy Scott was on his way up the trail to meet me for the hike down, he brought a thermos of hot coffee and muffins!

Sonya waits patiently for Scott and the muffins while I melt some snow with the jetboil.

The thermometer at about 630pm, it's going to get much colder! Fahrenheit on left Celsius on right.

What a cool :D place to have. I envy you.
Is it yours? Why don't you put a fire stove in there next summer? Then you could easily stay there for days.

^ I wish, it's not mine it's just a public shelter on Vermont's Long trail.

I HATE cold weather---but you make it look Great

Always look forward to your posts

Zeus says WOOF to Sonya!!!

wow I love it!! very cool pics and country you live in!!! my cousin moved up there as a ski instructor and I have always wanted to go up there.

Ahhhh - thanks, i needed that!!!!

Great photo's VTguy - what a great day/night for a hike. Not too much snow, though Sonya would probably be a great trail-blazer for you.

I was there in 76
Also in the winter
It is restricted in the spring

Is it the Camels Hump?
Remind me of the name of the shelter

There are some amazing bothies on the Long Trail
Hike and snoeshoed most of it in the later 70s

^ It's not camels hump it's a quite a bit south of there it's callled the breadloaf wilderness named after the prominent mountain in the area which resembles a loaf of bread. The shelter is called the skyline shelter. There are quite a few of these cabins on and near the long trail so you could have seen a number of them, they all look very similar. A lot of the trail is restricted in the spring because of Mud season.

I love the cold weather and snow. Thanks for the pics. Definitely looking forward to hiking some this winter, myself.

Nice. Spilled water freezing instantly is always sobering.

How did you get the dog out of the sleeping bag?
