A cold camp out at the skyline shelter! (pic heavy)

Bloody Hell.... I love these posts. Did you put a pad down under you? I didn't see one but some folks put it inside the bivy sack.

^ I usually use a small thermarest pad but I forgot it. I know, of all the times to forget it this was not the time :)

The Skyline on the Breadloaf...I think I saw heaven. What a view from your cloud. Thanks for the long lost feeling of the cold in the high mountains. Made my morning.

Great pics. The sunset view is amazing. you should get your dog her own sleeping bag, that she can carry around, but I'm not sure I'd throw such a good heatsource out of my bag.

It must get real hot during the summer though!

Those are indeed great shots. Looks like you had a really good time. I very much enjoy seeing the scenery, snow, and or course shots of your companion. We don't get much snow down here and really that suits me fine but I do love to look at it. One question: Since it is a public shelter, how do you know that after walking 4 miles up there, the cabin will not be occupied?

^ I don't know for sure but even in the summer theirs rarely people there, and the cabin can sleep probably 15 people so if there were people there I'd make some new friends. Besides not many people fancy camping when it's 0 degrees or below out so I knew there wouldn't be anyone there. A friendly dog and a flask of Bourbon makes friends real quick though :)

Nice! Man I would wimp out in that weather so fast! Beautiful place and awesome pics. My son and I are thinking about going camping at our favorite spot this weekend. Compared to your weather it will be a heat wave. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful pics man. I love cold weather and that shelter looks amazing. Thats a hell of a dog you have too. Husky??

^ thanks guy's glad you enjoyed them! Yup Long haired Siberian husky, much more hair than even a standard husky!

VTGUY! I envy you, first you live in a gun friendly state you showed me pictures that made me drool! Next public shelter? Hell if that was in CA it would first be full of homeless squatters, tagged up, and defaced! I'm glad things are different which I know it is, also love the dog pics I bet he/she enjoyed the cold? And god love the Glock and knife shot! Keep us drooling! Is this place far from the city?

^ city? lol the largest city in the whole state is Burlington and it's only 35,000 people :) Yea it's not near any cities.

Vermont is pretty much the most gun friendly state, no permit required to carry concealed. If you can legally own a handgun (meaning your not a felon) you can legally carry it open or concealed anywhere you like (of coarse the exception like all places is schools, court houses, etc...)

Also these shelters stay in good shape because you have to work to get to them, so the only people that go to them are people who appreciate them. And yes Sonya loves the cold!

^ unfortunately there is no wood fires allowed at this particular shelter because of elevation. Which I understand because the vegetation is considered alpine vegetation and is much more fragile up there. It doesn't bother me though because it keeps it nice and dense around the cabin because people aren't up there hacking away at all the trees for firewood.

After a healthy dose of good Bourbon and pork tenderloin Friday night Sonya and I decided to head up to the skyline shelter and have a little camp out. It was a full moon and -3 degrees by 230am. The shelter is just over 4000ft and sits right on an alpine lake. Thought I would share some pictures and details. It's a little over a 4 mile hike one way to the cabin.

The 8 mile unmaintained road to the trailhead (not bad now but get's pretty much un- passable in mid winter) That's why I have a big jeep :)

just starting to unpack the maxpedition falcon 2 it's perfect size for a light winter overnight. Probably way to small for most but I don't need a lot.

My wet shirt I took off once I got to the cabin, frozen almost instantly! The thermometer on the cabin door read 8 degrees at 3pm.

I hope you don't mind... this is my desktop background now. Absolutely stunning! I miss living near the mountains and the associated wintertime camping.
