I have had two offers go bust in a row for the sale of the same knife on the for sale forums. Both parties changed their minds after saying they wanted it. I try to be curteous and indicate a knife is sold when an agreement is reached. I have done that twice with the same knife and had to edit out the sold notice. I am concerned that potential buyers will somehow feel that the knife is tainted after coming on and going off the sale block like a proverbial Yo Yo. No, I am not going to name names, since I believe GB+U is to be used for more serious offenses. Both parties reniged before I sent them the knife in question. But I have to say as a general reminder that most people on the forums consider a written offer and acceptance as a commitment. Please don't say you want a knife unless you are sure.
Thanks for letting me do the soapbox standing thing:)

That's pretty much my take too. Do not say "I'll take it" & then back off. Think it over before hitting the send button. Of course there are extenuating circumstances (sudden expenses, illness, injury, etc.) that can kill a deal, & most sellers will accept that- but killing a deal that's been done (especially when posted as a "done" deal) can really mess up the seller.

Dave,

You are the one who chose to bring this matter to GB&U. You don't have to name the parties. Anyone can tell who the "guilty" parties from reading your post in the For Sale Forum. I wrote to you via private e-mail and apologized, but I guess you felt that wasn't enough. No deal was made, no terms were agreed on. Last night, I contacted you via e-mail and said I was interested , and I asked how you accept payment. You wrote back to me this morning and said the knife was mine. At that point I hadn't agreed to buy it. My personal preferrence is PayPal (even if it costs me an extra 3%), you said you would need either a certified check or money order. But, I'm not using this as an excuse. My reason for not making a deal with you is simple. A friend of mine saw my reply to your post. He offered me a MT UT6 DE HP'd at a lower price than yours. I sincerely felt that I had made no commitment to buy your knife, as I explained in my e-mail to you. In that e-mail, I apologized for wasting your time, and told you the truth. You chose not to accept my apology in the spirit that it was intended. You also stated that what I did was a quick way to get a bad reputation on the Forums. I stand by my reputation on these forums. Do a check on fisherk and see if you see any negative comments. I am a man of my word, but my word was never given to you. Saying one is interested is not the same as saying we have a deal. I have saved the few e-mails that we exchanged. If you want to bring everything to the table for others to judge who is in the right, in this matter - so be it.

As far as marking the knife sold, you did that in response to another potential buyer - not me. You are so worried that others will judge your knife in the wrong light. All I posted was "Mail Call". As far as the rest of the members know, I may have offered you a low ball amount or a trade in which you had no interest. IMO You have done more to drive potential buyers away than I ever could.

I might be one of the other guilty parties. So just in case I'm here to clear my name. Seeing how it appears I am one of the ones you refer to.
I wanted to ask a question about the knife so I posted mail sent.

Here is all of our email. never did I once agree to buy it. I said I was interested and that is all.

This is not one of the ones that sounds like **** is it? I just traded my boron coated one and I think I want another one.
Let me know.

Michael "armsraised"

I am not sure what you mean by sounds like s***. It makes the normal opening sounds of an OTF. Have I missed something?

When it comes to MT OTFs some have a cheap twang sound when they open and some don't. You have either been blessed and never gotten a bad one or have always had them and think it is normal.

-Michael

As you can see the only error I made was saying MT OTFs when all I meant was UT6s.

I was interested but when the seller of the knife did not know what I meant about the "twang" and could not reasure me I did not want to take a chance. I don't know about anyone else but I don't post a knife SOLD until it is in the mail going to the person who has sent me money for it.

When you are dealing with email you have to give people time to reply. things come up and you cant get back to people right away. I had not yet told him I was not interested anymore. He could have figured that out on his own but there is no way he could have figured that I agreed to buy the knife.

I am a man of my word and I am sure there are 100 people here that would agree with that.

...We've all been down this road waaayyy too many times to rehash it all again...

Simply put, a deal is a deal once both parties say 'deal'...a deal is a done deal once both parties say 'done deal'...anything else is just air.

This wasn't a deal, no one was wronged, the knife is still for sale...

"Move along folks, nothing else to see here, move along folks, keep it moving..."

Is my mane even one of the non named names?

And one more thing. Dave, no offense here but you are a professional sales person. You have been taught how to force things down peoples throats. You should not expect the same level dedication, precision and execution from everyone one you deal with. Your a trained seller and you yourself could be considered out of your league here. Take it easy on the rest of us who just have fun trading the same bunch of knives back and forth. Relax a little, it is a good price. I'm sure you'll sell the knife. Heck I may even offer to buy it. I have not decided yet.

If Ken and Michael are the two people that have been referred to in the original post I fail to see that there was any deals actually agreed too.

I can understand that something like this can be very irritating, but no real harm seems to have been done. If someone actually did agree to take the knife, that is a different matter all together. I believe that if you say you are going to take something that that is what you do. There are mitigating circumstances, but unless some kind of emergency comes up, when a person says that it is a deal then they should not back out.

Hello Folks,

I'm currently in a trade with Ken, and he is very polite, clear and calm in his E-mails, I trust him completely. Honestly, I don't understand your reaction. Ken asks how he should pay, you assume it's a deal. What if Ken could only pay in one way and you couldn't accept that?
But on the bright side. No Harm was done, neither of you lost anything, except someone here is trying to ruin some-elses reputation.
I've had this too, on the german messerforum. Even went so far that the knife was shipped to me without me even saying that we had a deal. I shipped it back, insured and signed. Boy that dude was pissed at me.. probably still thinks that my name and satan himself are the same :D .

I'm with Melvin here.. move along folks.

Oh another thing.. I always ask explicitly "do we have a deal ? " you can ask Ken.. I asked him too. He answered "deal." .
Then we exchanged adresses and it all worked out fine. So insted of trying to discredit your fellow knifenuts, learn from your and their mistakes and ASK black on white if you have a deal.

Greetz and take care all,
Bart.

P.S. this post is going nowhere with zero knife nor GBU content.. if a moderator could gently delete this ? it would not be missed, on the contrary.

Michael,
Sorry you have been swept up in this. you have nothing to do with it! You asked a good question and were given the answer. No problem at all. I don't mark a knife as sold as soon as I see the mail sent post. That would be crazy. I do post a BTTT if a mail-sent post appears and we do not come to terms.
Ken, Feel free to post our correspondence IN IT'S ENTIRETY if you so choose. I have never had anyone back out of a deal here and the two on the same knife. It pissed me off. I re-read the correspondence between us, and it read to me like a commitment with questions about method of payment, Paypal or M.O. In any case, I did not mention your name, only vented a little from what I believe is a legitimate gripe. Your name is tied to this because you chose to do it. I did not say which knife, at what time or in which forum these events occured. If you think that people are going to read this thread and then pour over the classifieds looking for where my name appears, then your sense of paranoia is much greated than mine.
I have had a ton of good dealings with people on there forums for over 3 years. My name has never been called in question of a bad or unfair deal.It has been mentioned several times on peoples"good to deal with" list. My final comment to you was that life will go on.
This idiocy can stop now or drag on as long as you want it to.
David

David, you didnt mention names, and obviously you didnt mean Michael. Knowing you always have a few deals going on at once, it wasnt obvious who you were talking about.
Your word has always been sterling around here and continues to be so.

Dave I never delt with you but I'm sure your a stand up guy.I have delt with Ken many times and I can assure you he is an honest guy and a straight shooter.Any misunderstanding with him is exactly that a misunderstanding. Ken is A#1 and an asset to anyone who deals with him! Sorry for your frustration! Mike

Dave, Masterchief, Thanks for the kind words. I was upset and let my emotions fly. If I had given it 24 before posting, I probably wouldn't have started this thread. It did not occur to me that by not naming names, I put everyone who contacted me under some sort of suspicion. Just the opposite. I hope this thing will just die and I will try to take a lesson learned from it.
Dave

Pretty funny! Hey I had fun getting involved anyways! This was my time going on like a foolish little school girl. It was fun, no wonder so many of you do this.

No hard feelings.:p

Michael (armsraised)! Sorry I left you out!!! Your a great guy also, and you have the nicest knives!!!!!!!!!! Mike

Just for info, the moderators here at Bladeforums do not delete posts.

We may move a post once in a while depending on content, but we do not delete them as a matter of policy.

Thank you folks, for keeping this thread civil, and mostly on topic.

:)

I hate to bring this back to the top but I understand David's frustration. I decided to put a few of my blades up for sale to raise some cash for Blade as I'm sure David has done. I got an email from a guy that said he would take one of them and asked how to send the money. I told him and he said he was on his way to the bank right that minute. I never got anything in the mail so I emailed him about a week later and asked the status of the money. He told me he had decided not to buy it. Thats so nice when someone says that they are sending the money and you have marked it sold. I could have sold that knife several times since then but now nobody wants it. I have dealt with David several times and I have always been pleased. David is a great guy!
michael

Michael I agree,if someone say's they are on their way to mail you money and a week later they tell you they're not interested that's not only a pile of shlitz but it's disrespectful and I would never give that person the time of day again.

Fortunately. . .I've been able to participate in knife deals with Both David and Ken. Each and every deal was perfect and am a extremely happy camper due to our change in "pink slips !" :D

Unfortunately. . .their deal fell through. No matter who was right or who was wrong ~ nothing will make it better !

Of course. . .unless you both send me a very cool knife ! :p

What's more important. . .both continue to have my respect and admiration !

If I've missed this in the past. . .Thanks guys ! :)

I've got to say that I've delt with Ken quite a few time over the past few years and he's always been a great customer:D I don't post that much over here anymore but I still check it out often and I just hate to see one of my regular customers that I know have always been straight with me get slammed. I see that Chicago pasta dude even got in on this one, hey Mike when are you going to make me one of those awesome dinners that we talked about?;)
