I hate this but, I got the always handy go bag out of the truck and emptied it out preparatory to my summer Western trip ...... OMG?... The CR2 batteries in the Surefire were dead, dead, dead..... The back-ups were outdated in 2013.... The Micropur tabs were out of date in 2014 as were the two 2 packs of AA's.... The hand warmer packs were the consistency of little bricks....AAAAAAargh.......

I do keep track of the red dot and tac light batteries on the stuff I carry either frequently or daily but the stuff in the box in the back of the truck??????? .....Obviously, not so much........

Check your go bags......

Ps..... Just put a reminder on the calendar.....

On a slightly different note..... I just ran across a quote from the ever succinct John Yeager of Tactical Response I heard in an Urban Survival course at Chance Sanders' school....

Don't do stupid stuff with stupid people in stupid places"......

Words that more than once I wish I had lived by?..

All best.....

Ethan

I'm in the process of updating my SHTF bag. Figure I will make a dedicated one and go a bit more grey in the process. Instead of wearing a duty belt every day I'm going to keep it as part of my kit in the car, if I need it, I can grab it.

Thanks for the reminder. I never put mu summer bag in the truck.
On it right now

I read somewhere and try to stick with checking batteries around holidays with fireworks. So they get checked around New Year's and the 4th of July.

Good reminder. I try to check all batteries around the house over daylight savings time in spring. Guess I should add the stuff in the truck to the list.

I started hoarding rechargeable batteries a while ago for just this reason. A couple of times a year I just recharge them all and I try to rotate my carry batteries with my batteries in my go bag.

don't forget to derust anything than can rust :D

Ethan has some magic strips that outgas for that purposes in closed containers...

gas goes bad too. esp anything with alcohol in it; you'd think we could have shelf stable gas, but apparently it's a commie ploy so that we don't stockpile.

same for batteries. in theory, a sealed battery COULD last "long time"... but nope. not cost effective. bad for the economy. god forbid 100 years from now your batteries end up in the hands of communists :D

Ethan,
Thank you for sharing those words. Not that I necessarily disagree with you, but your quote inspired me to remember that good judgment comes from experience ... and most experience comes from poor judgment! Just sayin'

Yep, time seems to fly past. I've also found that the spare food I keep at a cabin can be years past its use by date next time I look at it.

everytime you change and buy a new vehicle, update the stupid kit :D

it's a good time to also strip that old vehicle... i lost a good knife that way, i think, else, it was previously stolen by that nasty ass stealership i went to, and it wouldn't have been the first time something was taken from my car for a service. i hate those guys. cost them in the end.

Aren't there Energizer batteries that are rated to last 20 years?: I have 2035 (!) written on some of my more expensive AAA batteries...

Duracells have some that are 10 years, but are not much cheaper.

Must be something in the water.

i spent yesterday going through gear and making sure everything was ready to go.

I found a couple of things I had put away thinking I would remember to talke care of a lil something and forgot all about.

or if you carry an edc/go bag make sure its contents haven't been pilfered. I find weekly maintenance on mine keeps it in good shape with the wife and kids constantly in it or wanting something from it

Good call Mr. Becker. I have calendar reminders set for my go bag for this very reason. I'm like you in that my regular rotation firearms and equipment gets checked all the time, but I would forget my periphery equipment quickly if I didn't have reminders.

That's how I found out someone had managed to steal my (Camillus) BK9.
I guess it's better than finding out when I really needed it and the rest of the bag is good to go.

Thank you for the reminder Ethan! I'm going to use Cryptyc's tip and put a reminder on my calendar. Dunno why I didn't think of that before.... thanks!
