This is a matched pair of blades I’ve been working on, a revisit of a design I made about a year ago - this time as sort of a yin-yang theme, with two virtually identical blades interpreted in light and dark, refined and crude. The blade profile is based on the 'weehawk tanto' design originated by one of my knifemaking heroes, Jody Samson.

My photos don’t do the size of these justice - these knives are massive.

The blades are made of 3/16” thick Crucible S7, with 10-1/2"” long cutting edges, 2” wide at the widest point of the blade, and 17” overall. The handles are 6-1/2” long, and oversized to provide a solid, positive grip. Each features a sterling silver tiger menuki. The menuki on the dark blade is entirely covered by the lace because the menuki wouldn’t allow for lace to be under it - just too thick. It’s really my only regret on these blades, but it’s a minor detail, for sure.

The lace on both is saturated in resin. The guards and seppa are reversed in materials, with stainless steel and Richlite, a paper micarta, used for them. The seppa on the dark blade features a bit of nekogaki or ‘cat scratch’ on it, and then slightly tarnished to match the theme of the blade, and clean Richlite on the light blade.

Due to the different density of materials, there is a subtle difference in the weight of the two, but both balance about an inch in front of the guard, making for a good combination of speed and substance. The dark on is 19-1/8 oz, and the light one is 20 oz. True skull-splitters.

Thanks for looking!

Nice pair. :D

Love those things, could be like a couple of butterfly knives on steroids.

Where do you get the a Richlite from? I need some for guitar building.
