Well my pictures sort of suck but lately I've seen some worse here so I decided to post a couple of my first forged blades.

Last year I started my knife making journey by butting together about a dozen scandi type hidden tangs with pre made blades.I figured it was a good way to start and learn some skills.

I recently met a local full time knife maker who is teaching me to forge and allowing me to work in his shop on his equipment 3 days a week.

Here are two of my first knives with blades I forged, ground and heat treated

This first one is a spear point bowie. It's 16" OA with a 10" blade. It was forged from an old truck spring. The handle is polished elk with brass hardware.

At first I thought the handle was masking tape, then realized it was elk. I have half a deer antler (5 point) that is too big to use normally. I hadn't considered just grinding down the outside until usable. I will do the same with it now that I know it can be done.

zaph- I imagine that much grinding on an antler would STINK something terrible!!! I hate grinding one bone for that reason.

I like to seal it with the thinnest super glue first. Also if there is any chance you might get into the pith put a couple tubes into the ends.It will wick all through the antler and harden it.

If you do most of the shaping with a good rasp it cuts down on the smell and there is no chance of burning it.

I couldn't hardly capture the color in my photo's but here is one that is more accurate.

It still looks better in person.I buffed with white rouge and it really brought out the depth of the grain.

Nice work. I especialy like the hunter. (how would a bit darker bronze heve looked?)

It looks like you are turning out some great work! : thumbup: Having a mentor will help to shorten the learning curve immensely!

Very nice color on the Elk handle. I think my next knife will have a hidden tang, so I will be using this new found knowledge in about a month. I wanted a straight handle, but I really like the curved look of yours.
