Okay so I've had my Large Sebenza for about 6 or 7 months and I love it. It's absolutely my favorite knife.

But I have this worry in the back of my head - I'm a knife lover so I enjoy, carrying, using, and playing with my knives. So I open and close my blades quite a lot.
This being the case, I read that if you open and close your Sebenza too much you can damage the lock bar and cause lock rock(even if it's years down the road) and in this case CRK would NOT fix it under warranty because it would be considered abuse.

First - Is this true? Is this a valid worry?
Second - How and why is opening and closing the knife too much considered abuse? Is there really such a thing as opening and closing it too much?
Third - I don't have this worry with my cheaper knives, and if this is truly the case, I may need to move on from my Sebenza.

I don't wrist flick the knife and I certainly don't flick it out with my thumb a lot. But I do open and close it a lot. So, I don't see anything I do to the knife as abuse. But I have read a few things and it makes me worry. I don't abuse any of my knives and it would really just kill me if something did happen down the road and I couldn't get my $400+ knife fixed under warranty for so called abuse when all I did was open and close the knife "too much".

Thanks in advance for all of the helpful replies I think I'll get.

Thanks,
Jessie

I've been opening and closing an Insingo for the last 1/2 hour watching TV.
I'll be following this thread...

This is not a valid worry, these are very well made tools. Keep them lubed and they should last forever, especially if you aren't abusing them, which you aren't.

Yes, please do, and not to worry! Chris has said they aren't worry beads but it definitely can take it.

I am in your boat too, I open and close mine all the time and have noticed some wear on the lockbar from this, but Im not really worried about it because its CRK it will take it and if not they will fix it.

^^^ Are you sure they'll fix it? Because I was told that this could be considered abuse(How I'm not sure)?

Mine is showing zero wear on the lock bar. But I do open and close it a lot.
I want to know that I can do this and that if it DID start to form wear/issues later on down the road that CRK would take care of it.

I'd say steel on steel will eventually wear down. Take a look at the folks who have had sebenzas for 5-10+ years. Some may not hard use them and some may.

If anyone uses their knife for whatever it may be, for years down the road it'll slow down a bit. Enjoy it. My small regular gets the most use. Can't worry about the small.things

normal open close movements are nor warranty voiders, normale use brings normal wear, which will be fixed
my "user" one, has been opened and closed a large numeber of times, the others too, no worries here

I think that's a good sign that it's showing zero wear at this point.

My recommendation would be to use the heck out of your favorite knife. I think you're the perfect beta tester to find out *if* an issue showed up later that they'd take care of it, (I think they would).

I've bought several used and user CRK knives and they have all held up. I currently EDC a very used small Sebenza that is from 2006 and it is going strong.

I have read text somewhere straight from Chris, and I will have to paraphrase: "A Sebenza is not a worry stone" and "excessive opening and closing is not its intended purpose and is considered abuse."

Personally I do it a lot too. I have never had a problem with a Sebenza's lock, but I did once wear the detent ball almost completely flat.. Closed retention was still great though.

I believe that the Sebenza 25 will be bombproof in this arena.

Use the crap out of it. If it wears out in 10 years buy another one. I would consider it a good deal at $40 a year, or roughly $3.50 a month for a great pocket knife!

The way I look at it is all of my gear, watches, and guns are being rented. If I looked at them any other way I'd never take the protective wrap off! :)

Who the hell knows any more, I've heard a lot of conflicting stories.

I do know according to CRK (true or not) he wrist flicked a seb thousands of times with no damage. So I'd say opening and closing a bunch is fine, thumb flicking is fine. I'd stray away from wrist flicking like Chris did in his vid. But I've never met anyone who opens a knife like that anyways.

Steel on Ti will wear, but I believe CRK has it down well compared to most.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. I guess I can just hope that he would fix lock rock under the warranty in some odd years if it started to form.
I don't wrist flick it at all and rarely even thumb flick it.
I just open and close it regularly a lot.
I just enjoy the buttery smooth action and find myself opening and closing it a lot lol.

My question is what is "excessive opening and closing"? I don't understand that. We're knife people and we enjoy our fine knives so chances are, we open and close them quite a bit.
How is that abuse? I don't agree with that.

Excessive opening and closing to me anyways would mean opening and closing it but not using the blade to cut anything and then repeating this. It would be a equivalent to revving your cars engine at every stoplight just because you like to hear it.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, I've carried two different CRK's for better than two years each as my edc knife( a small Insingo and a tanto Umnum ). I used them daily at any excuse to remo e them from my pocket, I did not abuse either in my eyes but I did use them both HARD! Neither has developed rock or worn in any detectable amount further than the lock up was when new.
To say that I'm amazed by this quality would be an understatement and is why I've carried a CRK as my main blade for about 6 years and can't see ever changing.
I'm now carrying a Seb 25 that Theaidansdaddy was nice enough to sell me from the first run, I can't wait to see how it'll hold up when it hits two years as my edc blade.

I also have no doubt that CRK would take care of your knife if it developed any issue, they're good folks.

Oh, and I do open and close my edc knives constantly for no other reason than to do so while watching tv at the end of the day, hasn't caused any problems- enjoy your knife.

Oh and High Gear's post is spot on!
