I made a thread a few weeks ago and the answers I recieved therein have been a great help and I have been reading a lot. But I do have a few more questions that I cant find the answer to anywhere, so here they are:
1. Where do you guys get your steel? All I can find anywhere is damascus, and I'm looking for 1084.
2. Ive been looking for an affordable forge, I couldnt find anything premade for under about $900 which is way over my budget, so I looked around for diy forges and found this guide, but how do you light that?

Thanks all I need is the steel and then I should be able to start working.

browse larry zoellers website just google him. u can buy forges parts and just learn a ton of stuff from that web site

also type in "gas forge" in the search bar on ebay. there are some that look ok. some of the guys will give you a tuff time if the forge isnt round but beggers cant be choosey. anyhow i am thinking about one of the gas forges off ebay from HM ironworks out of ohio

Thanks for the help, Zoeller had some great ideas that I think Im gonna use since it looks like I could build my own forge for about $100 that would do everything I need. And thanks for pointing me in the direction of admiral for steel.

You can forge in just about anything including a hole in the ground ala Time Lively with just about anything that burns, I've heard of people forging using corn cobs. I have used chunks of wood when I used to forge in charcoal..... as I forged the wood would char and I'd rake them into the fire.

My first propane burner cost me about $12 using black pipe from a plumging supply house. It was a venturi burner though. The refractorys and gas fittings really add to the cost of a forge.

I buy my steel from Aldo, I've heard nothing but good things about Kelly. Jantz, Sheffields Knife Supply, Uncle Als (Riverside Machinery), Pop's, Midwest Knife, those just are off the top of my head as far as knife suppliers that have steel and just about everything else.
