A couple questions for the ladies

Ladies, please help me out if you don't mind. I want to boy my wife Ashley a knife for edc, but I'm not sure what to get. She's a claims adjuster for an insurance co. and drives around all day looking at cars and writing estimates. I don't think she really NEEDS a knife for her job, bot I just think everyone should carry a knife for practical reasons. She really hasn't given me any help in selecting one, she's relying on my judgement (That was her first mistake). Anyway, what do you ladies prefer in a knife? What do you use them for? Do you use them often? Are they a staple in your wardrobe like a belt or watch? I was thinking of getting her a Benchmade Mini Griptilian with pink handles, is this to patronizing? Also, my 8 year old daughter Sarah wants a knife too, I'm not sure if she's just jumping on the bandwagon, or trying to please me, or if she really does want one, but I'm thinking of getting her the same knife. If I do, I'm not going to let her carry it, and only use it with supervision. Can I have your thoughts on this too? I bought Ashley a Case Slimlock with a damascus blade and mother of pearl handle for our aniversary, but I don't think it went over vert well (This is a testament to how much I know about what women want). She says she loves it, but I'm not sure I believe her, anyway, it's a little too fancy to carry(her words). Please feel free to chime in, any advice, and specific examples would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, im not a lady....but.

My girl friend hates knives.... mainly because i play with mine all the time...
However a mini grip is what i would get her.........
She is lying to you, by saying that its too fancy to carry..... There is no doubt in my mind........
I decided im not going to give a knife as a gift just becuase i like knives.....

I think it would be like , if she got me a box set of Sex and the city DVD's, I probably wouldnt be too happy either...
Matt

(Holy Heck, i didnt realize you gave her the knife on your anniversary ..... thats too funny............LOL :D) J/K...

I have a Y chromosome, but I will answer anyway because if you are looking for females on this forum you are going to be listening to crickets unless the one or two happen to find this post. First, you blew it giving a knife on your anniversary. No lady wants a knife on a romantic occasion except the one or two mentioned above, and that does not include your wife. Second, if you have already given her a knife and she doesn't carry it, what makes you think she will carry the next one? "Too nice to carry" is an excuse. There is no such thing as too nice when it comes to the things that women carry. Give her something that she would want, not what you would want. If you can't figure that out, ask a woman, preferably one who knows her, but that is not absolutely necessary. Finally, whenever a knife nut wants to gift a knife to an non-knife person, the answer is almost always SAK. In this case, the Classic might work and comes in a variety of colors and even a floral pattern. Just don't give it to her on her birthday or any other occasion when she would rather have something thoughtful. That way, there is a chance she will appreciate it instead of wondering what kind of jewelry the same money could have bought.

+1 for SAK
My wife loves hers, even smuggles it into school.....horrors!
who would have thought such a wepon (classic) could actually be a useful tool???

You blew it smitty you blew it :p. You gave your wife a knife on your anniversary?!!! I'd be very surprised if she put on the "birthday suit" for you that night :D. Just teasing ya, The SAK Classic is the only thing that my girl and my mom will carry that I have bought them, and not for a "special occasion" either, more of a just because sort of gift.

SAK Classic:
Girls like tweasers, they need toothpicks for when you take them out for dinner, there is the file that they use for their nails, the little flathead screwdriver for miscelaneous items, and the blade for opening mail. That is the all around perfect knife for a woman. Under $10 at wally world if red is the color of choice.

What about Böker's Slim Gentleman? Now obviously the intended recipient isn't a gentleman, but she may be gentle and/or slim. (You could neglect to mention what the knife is called. It doesn't look to manly or womanly to me, just nice.)

Anyway, it's a light knife from a well-known brand for surprisingly cheap, and it has the advantage of being configured like a modern folder. The hope would be, if she sees how practical the one-handed clip knife is, it may get more use than a Swiss Army, delightful as SAKs are.

The fiancee loves her pink mini grip! Carries it all over but also has found an interest in knives as well. Good luck- maybe try a leek, a switchback, a Meerkat (all knives my fiancee has bought/ absconded from me).

Back when we were courting (ain't that quaint?), I presented my wife with a SAK Climber, or whatever they were called more than 3 decades ago. She was delighted, carries it everywhere to this day, uses it often. Every few years I perform maintenance and it's good to go. She especially favors the scissors over any others we have for clipping her toenails. Ah, romance! :D

I am a woman, and I have been carrying a knife for 34 years. I do not leave the house with out a knife. A knife IS an integral part of me!! I currently use/carry/buy custom knives only. My avatar IS one of the knives that I carry for EDC . I AM currently carrying a Rick Hinderer XM-18.

Hmmm. How about a Small Sebbie? A Mnandi?

T.K.C. ... You Rock!

I cant even say the word custom around my significant other......

I'd recommend a Kershaw Leek or Chive, perhaps in Rainbow finish.

Good call Dekz , I forgot all about the rainbow leek. That is a knife that even my girl likes to look at, and she hates all of my knives :p. This sounds like a winner for smitty.

A friend of mine is a real estate agent. She carries a medium sized SAK. Sometimes the little key boxes real estate agents use get stuck and she uses the SAK screwdriver to nudge them open. The most recent time I saw her use her SAK was to take apart, and put back together, a picture frame to hold some promotional material on a table in a house she was trying to sell.

She knows about Leathermen tools. I gave her one, but she seems to prefer her SAK.

My lady always has a Scallion with her. She also carries her rainbow Leek quite often. She said that my Ti-bump was too big to carry, until I got her one:D. That is her weekend dress knife. Lucky for me she has always liked knives and guns. I am going to surprise her this week with a rainbow Scallion.:)

Earlier this week friend's wife decided she would like to have a knife she could carry. She felt that his Small Sebenza was a little too heavy. He showed her my Mnandi and she liked it very much but didn't want wood inlay. He bought her a beautiful Mammoth Ivory Mnandi with a damascus blade.

I'm not a woman but how about a Leatherman Micra- not exactly a "knife" but i think it fits a little bit more- scissors, tweezers, screwdrivers, nail file- only thing my sister will even use and I have a few SAKs

Spyderco Kiwi in one of the fancier material scales? Maybe Mother of Pearl and Abalone.

I recently bought a kershaw Chive and never once got to use it. "She who must be obeyed" immediatly took it and is never without it.

The secret of giving good presents is to give what the other person wants, but won't buy for themselves. DO NOT GIVE THEM WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO HAVE!
