A couple ?'s before I refurb my new, old GB double bit

Well, I picked up an old GB double bit at a yard sale for $12. I already posted about it here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/848422-Hello-and-Today-s-Yard-Sale-Finds-GRANSFORS-BRUKS-and-a-COUNCIL

I have a couple questions for y'all:

1) Is this considered a "throwing axe" or a "felling axe?" Or maybe both apply - either way, stay calm - I'm not going to throw it. I am asking because the only GB replacement handle I have found so far is described as being for a throwing axe, and it has no end knob-it's perfectly straight.

2) Why should I or shouldn't I order an authentic GB replacement handle as opposed to a generic?

3) Is there any way to get an idea of how old the thing is?

Any other advice on finding and selecting a proper haft is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

GB handles are pretty nice. no reason NOT to get one, but I can't think of a strong reason to spend the 30 bucks or so it'll cost you when you can get any number of nice double-bit handles for quite a bit less $.

I think the only differences in the throwing handle or felling handle in the GB line are length and the end-swell (the throwing axe handle is shorter and straighter). I could be wrong on that, and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I don' think GB pins their throwing heads to the shaft like some makers do.

Lastly: why wouldn't you throw that thing? axe throwing is a lot of fun (well, okay, I only throw hatchets and 'hawks, but I bet it is just as much fun).

Personally, I would buy a working handle, they are still straight and you could still throw it. I would look for a local source but making sure the grain was correct. Hell of a find, they're worth over $200.00 dollars.

Thanks, guys. I don't plan to throw it because I would probably end up striking a rock and chipping it. Then I would cry. I've never thrown an axe, and I don't intend to do the trial and error stage with a GB! :D

throwing IS alot of fun. we used to throw axes all the time (for competition) when i was a member of the UM woodsmans team. that was a while ago though:)

Sorrry to hijack but bearhunter; what part of Maine are you in? I live in Manchester (just outside of Augusta).

I'd suggest just getting a cheap handle and playing around with it for a bit. Since you didn't say anything about experience with double-bit axes, I think you should strip the head, rehandle it, sharpen it up and go knock some trees over :D
