a crappy knife vs another crappy knife.

My sons each have a S&W Homeland Security. $9 folders, and more knife for the money than you'd expect. The lock is reliable and strong enough. The steel is soft, dulls easy but sharpens easy as well. They are combo edges, and the serrations are ok. The knife is way too heavy for a 3.5" folder but at least it's rugged, certainly for the money.
I would not worry about ramming it into a treetrunk, it would not break or fold.

I wouldn't hesitate to use a S&W POS in self defense. Mainly my tactic would involve throwing it at the BG and running like hell. Better a $15 mass produced hunk of Chinese junk than one of my limited or discontinued Benchmades or Spydercos.

Actually, the more I think about it, this ain't a bad idea...

Of course it isn't. Most victims (perhaps subjects is a better, more neutral word :D) are stabbed with the cheapest of knives. There's no reason why a cheap Chinese folder wouldn't do just fine in a pinch.
