I was just out playing a bit with it. We had a storm here the other day so there are lots of pine trees lying around. I hacked away on some of them and the Rat performed just fine. It's not a forest axe and it doesn't do as well as GB and Fiskars on wood(i have one in my car but was too lazy to include it in the picture), but it's way more fun! The CR and LMAX has a more neutral balance than GB and Fiskars. Haven't tried the LMAX yet but i suppose it and the Rat will be fairly similar. The LMAX is a bit heavier and has a grippier handle so i guess it is more effective. The steels are similar (S-7 vs. SR-77) so no big differences there. I think the handle on the Rat is a little on the thin side. I got tired quickly when using it. The LMAX has two drawbacks. First, the handle is perfectly round in profile, which means that it may twist when it hits and be tough on the wrists. Second, the handle is in aluminim which is great for the summer but absolutely dreadful if it's cold. The handle will suck all the heat from your hands even with thin gloves.
Edge holding is good... it had a tiiiiny chip/indentation (too small to say and i don't have a microscope) when i got it and the tip of the edge had poked out of the box so it had dulled some... i guess from hitting shelves and stuff on its way across the Atlantic. I also dropped it on the pavement when i got back from testing it so the edge got a bit banged up from the asfalt... nothing major though. I used a ceramic steel a couple of strokes on each side and then stropped it on a leather belt... it shaves cleanly now.
I'm planning to do some more tests with my axes (the 3 above + ATC VTAC and Fiskars) and a few knives (SYKC S6, Busse HR, FBM, Fällkniven MC1) soon... will post pictures
