I finally got things in order and was able to spend Thursday at Dan Seavers shop. I got on the road by 7:30. Sunny morning with a bit of early-day chill. Perfact morning for a drive! 2 1/2 hours on secondary roads & little country towns, with some great scenery along the way. About 10:00, I had missed a turn so I gave Dan a call to see where I was.:o [getting better about not going 50 miles when I'm not sure.:D] Only a couple miles & 2 turns away!

Now, this guy lives as close to God's country as you can get! And has a brutaly large and truely impressive pile of steel-squashin' Fairbanks hammer in the shop!

We spent the day talking knives, steel, damascus, pets, tools, and whatever came to mind. And, of course, we played in the fire and beat down a few pieces of Don's 2 1/8" W2. Dan made it real easy to come in and be comfortable. Almost felt like I'd been there before.

I think you'll see some cool damascus comming out of Dan's shop. He's got a good start on equipment, a lot of ideas, and the desire to do it right. I can't wait to see what he comes up with [and maybe get my fingers into it,too:D].

Thanks, Dan!! I had a great time and it was a pleasure to spend the day with ya.

Did I mention that giant, hulking hammer? That was ok,too!:thumbup:

I can't wait 'till the next trip!! [give Coop an extra bite from me!;)]

If two bladesmiths hang out together and pound some steel and there are no photos, did the hammer make a sound?

Thanks for the news Randy!

You guys better lighten up. I believe Dan is a young fella. We don't need the guy corrupted by the demented and deranged! That means you George. Back off dude. :foot: :barf: :foot: :barf:

Randy it was a pleasure to have you down to my shop. I had a lot of fun. I'm working on my first bar of firestorm pattern, so if everything goes well we will make you a bar of firestorm or explosion the next time your down here.

Don't worry I'll spoil coop rotten while he waits for your return. :)

Phil, I'm already corrupted; just not as severely as some of them. :D

Thanks Dan. I look forward to the next visit!:thumbup:

Good luck with the new pattern, can't wait to see it. I can stack up a billet or two of 1095/15n20 for the next time. Maybe some more practice tongs, too!:o

I knew when I saw Cooper, he was pretty abused. Glad to hear he'll get a little attention 'till my return!;):D

Phil, I'll get some pics next visit. I took a couple this time but they did'nt come out well. Need to spend some more time learning my camera, I've only had it a year and a half....................................

Arrrrg Dewey! I'm waiting for replacement screws for the front guide. :( The fire storm looks alright, not as flashy as i would like though. I do have an idea for improvement though! :)

Not a horrible first attempt at it.

That firestorm looks good to me! I am working on the raindrop you sent me. I am taking it slow so I can make sure it looks as good as the steel pattern.

Thanks Pancho!

I've seen some of your recent knife pictures, based on those I'm sure its going to look great!

I think your right Sam, I also think more crushed w's would help.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna make it to ashokan this year, depends on if I get any sales.

Sorry Dan, not ignoring you. Been busy, and having 'puter problems.

Get your screws yet?? I hope you're up & running again by now. I think that pattern looks good. I'd like to see it ground into. Bet it's sweet!!

I hate to miss Ashokan this year but it's not lookin' good here, either. We'll have to have our own hammer-in!! ;):)

Talk to ya soon......................

No problem Dewey, I know your busy bud.

I got the screws on the 21st, destroyed two bars of maidens hair pattern since then too. The bars actualy sheared in half during twisting once I got over 3 twists per inch. But I have an idea of why and will be testing my theory next week. I'm also building a venturi burner propane torch next week if I have the cash for the parts. :)

Hammer in eh? Sounds good buddy. I'm gonna have to retrain you for the hammer though. I just cleaned the belt again and it does work about twice as fast; but you can't go too hard or it will exceed the maximum BPS of 4.5 a second.

Dan that looks great! I think as you grind into it for a blade it will be much showier.

I'm thinking $30 per cubic inch for this pattern, so 1/8x1x12 would be $45. Any thoughts?

BTW I can't make it to ashokan this year. I'm gonna have a small hammer in mid to late October though. :)

Sounds like a good price for some gorgeous steel! Sucks you can't make it to Ashokan, nextyear is sword year YOU BETTER BE THERE Dan :D
