I managed to escape the hazy, foggy valley and got up to Giant Forest today. These pictures do not come close to doing justice to the trees, you have to be there and touch them to get a feel for how big they really are. In this first picture, I put my daypack at the base of the tree for scale (I was by myself, so I couldn't have someone else in the picture for scale).

Next to that tree is The President, the fourth largest tree. I put my BR Canadian Special on the trunk for scale, see if you can find it:

Then I went by the Senate and House groups:

cool pics...hadn't seen a "cluster" pics like your last one before...

Great pics.

Been a few years since I've been up there and yea , you really do have to stand next to those beauts to realize how huge they are.

Got an older Nam-Vet buddy I hike with off and on who swears there are lost "groves" of Redwoods around there.

Havent' found them yet. :D

Here is a view of typical forest in that area:

I hiked down by Crescent Meadow, which is all brown at this time of year. Look closely at the small, young fir trees on the right at the far end of the meadow; you probably have trees like this in your neighborhood, 30-40' tall or more. Now compare them to the trees behind them:

Then I went up the High Sierra Trail about a mile to Eagle View, where I was rewarded by a fantastic view of the Great Western Divide (high point is in center, Black Kaweah, 13,765'):

Looking back toward the hazy/foggy valley where I live:

On the way back down from Eagle View I came across this guy keeping close tabs on a couple does; he was so preoccupied that he let me get within 20':

To give you an idea of the scale, here is a shot looking at the crown of the General Sherman tree. Note the scar where a branch broke off near the top a couple years ago:

And here is the branch:

And finally, no thread would be complete without a picture of the tools of the trade. I took some that normally don't go on backpacking trips.

Rock Creek is on the west side of the Whitney group, about 20 miles east of the Great Western Divide. Eagle View is on the High Sierra trail, about a mile out of Crescent Meadow in Giant Forest, on the west side of the Sierras. Here is a picture I took earlier this year at a small lake on Rock Creek just below Miter Basin:

Thanks for the great pictures. People on this forum post some amazing sights. The exceptional ones (from my perspective) like the one immediately above this post, I save in a scenery folder for future Desk Tops.

And my problem is trying to decide which picture to use for my desktop each day. For example, the two longer trips I took this year were five days and eight days in the backcountry in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. On the five day trip I took about 500 pictures, and on the eight day trip I took over 600 pictures. Obviously, not all of them turned out great, but enough did that I have trouble deciding what mood I am in. Kind of like deciding which knife goes in the pocket each day...

But if you were to ask for my favorites, this one would be on the short list - Big Wet Meadow in Cloud Canyon, Kings Canyon NP:

Amazing pictures. Doc is right. Everybody in this forum posts some incredible views from their hikes. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pics lambertiana.
I was just up at Giant forest with my in-laws, it's a beautiful area. I like the picture with your backpack for perspective, I've got one with my mother in-law, and the tree just dwarfs her.

BTW: I can't find the knife in the one pic, is it even visible?lol.

Yep, it's there - look at the fissure on the left side of the trunk. I put it at about head level for me.
