A dead-simple Kydex holster for the Sifu!

I've been doing pocket carry for the Sifu but...I miss the greasy-fast access I used to have with my old AlMar QSVs and the leather rigs I used to build. In doing some cleaning, I realized I had one small sheet of .090" Kydex laying around, and pondered how to sheath the Sifu. What I came up with seems to be unique, extremely simple and is capable of speed-draws *faster* than my old AlMars.

The concept I was starting from was a "belt slide" type gun holster, most commonly used for 1911-type pistols and other autos. A good picture of same from: http://gunweb.com/advertis/hellweg/index.html

What I did was take a single strip of Kydex, cut perfectly rectangular, the same width as my belt and exactly the length of the closed Sifu. I heated it, laid the Kydex on a flat metal surface then laid the Sifu across it closed...not at 90degrees, but at a "forward cant" of about 30degrees from vertical. In other words, with the Kydex laid sideways as it'll be on the belt, the pivot-up closed knife is tilted forward at around the same angle that the barrel of that gun is tilted in that picture above.

The upper layer of the Kydex is folded so that the bottom layer is about 3/8ths" longer than the top. I used my heavy gloves to mold the Kydex right down onto the finger grooves, with the "hump" in the middle of the spine right dead center of the Kydex. In other words, most of the grip above the belt, maybe an inch and 3/4ths below. Exactly where isn't critical, as long as it's TIGHTLY molded via your fingers! I used rough-side-in on the Kydex and got good results.

In my version, the "fold" in the Kydex is to the rear of the sheath, and it's set up strong-side.

However, with my .090" grade kydex in a strip only 1.5" wide, there was NOT enough tension to keep things anywhere near steady enough. A minute of head-scratching had the answer: I drilled two holes just in front of the knife where the Kydex meets, and tied a loop of 1/4" bungee cord through it and tied in the back. THAT gives the whole thing enough tension.

A crude picture:

Guys, no joke here, this is a FAST rig. You pinch it just behind the pivot with your thumb between you and the grip and you just snap it upwards...you never need touch the thumbstud or even the slidebar. The pic above is how I did it for strongside right carry but you can reverse for southpaw easily enough. Once built, you tie it onto your belt with leather lace, paracord or whatever and then slide the belt on and off.

You can also re-sheath it one-handed, unlike previous designs I've done.

I've never seen a Kydex rig with less materials or simpler to build. I carried it today, absolutely no looseness or slippage whatsoever AND no fumbled draws in living-room practice.

I would like to see that sir. i am a bit slow and can't seem to visualize your words my fault not yours

if you can post a pic I'd love to see it. Worth a thousand words they say it is.

Jim,

I know a few months back when the SIFU came out, Mike Sastre was working on a Concealex sheath for it. Last time I heard, Mike hadn't been able to get back into BF because of his pc for some reason. He has been swapped with orders and phone calls since he had his sheaths featured in some magazine recently.

Any one else heard from Mike?

Maybe this pic will help:

Instead of a "cutaway view", this is much closer to how it actually looks. You'll need to refer to both this pic and the other because in this second view, the rearmost laceholes are shown covered by the upper Kydex layer.

The reason this works is the extreme finger grooves of the Sifu. I've never seen any other knife sheath of this design.

I need to make clear that I've built one of these so far for me. If anybody wants to make one for personal use, go for it. If you want to make them commercially, consider the design "shareware" and kick me back $5 a pop

. Less if you can figure out an elastic tension system that's not as cheesy as a loop of bungee

.

I don't think it's got wide appeal beyond the Sifu, because without those peculiar finger grooves it wouldn't work.

As is, it ROCKS for the Sifu, it's as fast a folder draw system as I've ever seen and carries very comfortably.

I got pics:!

These are of my personal "Mark1" proof-of-concept version. Later ones will be cosmetically improved (no wrinkles on the outer face caused by glove seams, fr'instance) but this shows how it works.

Front view: this is how it looks on the outside face away from the belt:

This is the "inside face". Note the knot at the bungee cord; future versions will lack bungee, I'm doing something else. You can see the leather laces all set up as belt loops...

NOTE: I lost some EMail data, I just got some Kydex in and I'm making two of these for starters, one for Vampire Gerbil and one for another guy WHO I DON'T HAVE EMAIL FOR - so dude, EMail me with your snailmail addy again (I'll recognise your name), they'll be ready to ship this weekend. I already EMailed VG.

Thanx!

great idea.i used to make alot of kydex holsters and sheaths but ran out of time.buy some pvc foam and glue it to two pieces of plwood.cut two rectangular pieces of kydex about 6 inches long.cut two vertical slots to form belt loops and drill two holes on each end of kdex.i use pop rivets to join these pieces.heat to 325 then pull out and lay on one side of foam.quickly lay knife in between pieces and position where you want it.place other piece on top and apply pressure.i usually stand on mine.after about 3 min remove andcurve around the area youre gonna carry it on and finish cooling.you now have a molded tension belt slide for the sifu.i sold about 500 of these for glocks and berretas.hope this helps.a simple inside the pants holster is easy too.cut kydex twice as wide and about 3/4 length of sifu handle.heat and fold over sifu place in foam and mold.the opening in the kydex should be toward the blade.drill a hole at the mouth of the sheath(outside only)and place a 2in lop of paracord in hole< tie off.you have an iwb holster with a belt loop to hold it in pants.

I know I'm joining this conversation a little late, but have you guys seen the sheaths done by REKAT for the Pocket Hobbit and Pioneers? They are set up so that there is a belt loop on the back formed by bending a strip of kydex backwards, and then another strip around from the back towards the front, leaving the very front open. There is also a small lip on the bottom to keep the knife from dropping out. The knife is removed from the sheath by pushing the top of the knife forward (the knife is held pivot down), and snapping the blade open. It seems like it should be possible to do something similar for the Sifu.
