A DIY blade for Morseth Fans

Any knife nut who's into vintage custom knives has heard of Harry Morseth. He was known for using Norwegian laminated steel blades in his knives. He'd get 'em from Brusletto of Geilo, Norway, make his own handles, and reprofile the blades as he saw fit by cold grinding to preserve the temper. Brusletto has been around a long time. When the famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundson went on his South Pole expedition, he had a Brusletto on his belt.

Anyhow, with the passing of Bill Moran, a genuine icon of American custom knives, I figured some of y'all might be interested in making your own Morseth knife, by way of nostalgia and paying homage to the old time custom knifemakers.

You can get the blades from Ragnar, www.ragweedforge.com , here's a pic and description;

brusletto-morseth.jpg

"These were recently discovered in the factory warehouse. They are old stock and were apparently made for the American knifemaker Harry Morseth. For some reason they were never delivered. They are laminated carbon steel, 4 7/8" long, 1" wide, and about .175" thick. Apparently Mr. Morseth liked his blades stout, and these are a good bit thicker than any other Brusletto blades I've seen. The blades are stamped rather than etched with "Brusletto Norway". They have been newly cleaned and polished by the factory.

Might have to get one of these for myself and do up an antler, brass, and stacked leather handle for it. Would make for a really cool/fun knifemaking project.

BTW, for those who don't remember Morseth knives

Cool. It does sound fun. I haven't ordered a blade from Ragweed yet. Maybe I'll get one of these. I like the idea of a stouter blade.

Hmmmm.....intriguing....

I'm really not at all a fan of the Swedish laminated steels, but this one's calling to me....

I've been meaning to make an order from Ragnar anyways....It's probably the clostest I'll ever get to a Morseth anyways....

Strange....I never thought it would happen...

I just showed this link to my wife, told her I'd like to get a couple of them. She would hear none of it. Absolutely would NOT let me buy a couple of these blades.

She says I need to get at least FIVE of them!! Guess what my family's gettin' for Christmas next year??;)

I'm thinking I'll stay fairly traditional on this one. Curly Birch, reindeer horn, and a brass guard. Perhaps some Birch bark in place of the horn. Although I would like also like to do one with Ebony and a forest green micarta spacer.

OH GOODY GOODY FUN!! FUN!!:D :D

Further down the page I really liked that Ulu blade. Living in Alaska I've seen and used my share of them, and none have been as nice looking at that one is.

Happily, I was just GIVEN a bandsaw yesterday, so roughing the handles should be pretty easy.

Thanks for the link, Sarge!

I've had a lot of fun with this kind of blade. Here are a couple of knives me and my son made.

The bottom one is mine. It doesn't look like much but it's a good knife. It even got a complement from Kami Sherpa when he took a look at it. He was able to show me a way of holding it that I had not thought of.

It just goes to show that you don't have to be a great craftsman to make a decent knife with one of these blades.

If you want to play with making knives Bo Bergman's book "knifemaking" is quite good for this style of blade. Lots of pretty pictures you guys will love.

I really like the dangler sheaths. Mine above is made of twined braintan buckskin. I wonder why Morseth didn't use danglers.

I got two. I like to make Puukko's and these blades seem to be good stron ones that can take handle pins because of the tang size.

Ok guy's stupid quesition coming..

For rehandling one of these, and other knives with rat-tails...All I gotta do is find a chunk of hardwood and sand it to fit my hand...Drill a hole that closely matches the tang and apply glue and hammer away?? Finish with wood seal?

I gotta rehandle my baby khuk before I add anything else...Anyone wanna volunteer some cheap hardwood (cheery or red oak) or trade some handle love for leather love??:D

back on topic...I like the looks of that...Gonna have to take a looksee at one, again once I get my baby Chit rehandled :(

Just ordered four of 'em and four of the Ulu blades! I'm excited!:D

Leatherface, Sounds like ya' got the gist of it. I got some extra horn and a bit of mahogany floating around the garage if you'd like some. (it's more horn that I can stand to use myself anyways!)

I'd suggest you check out my current thread "Mikes Week of Knifemaking" for two reasons:

1. you can take a look at the little Puukko that I made....it should be inspiring, if a drooling Northwoods piece of white trash like me can pull it off, anyone can!:D

2. (And more importantly) Kismet linked Sarges "Project Po' Boy" thread in there. Lotsa good stuff to getcha lined out there.

Hi Leatherface:

There are no stupid knife questions.

The Puukko is fun to build because you can do it in so may ways. I prefer a guard in front of the handle at the blade and build the handle behind it. Sometimes reindeer horn/wood. Sometimes nickle silver or brass spacers and carbon fiber spacers for color and contrast. You can epoxy the handle and pin it through the tang or just epoxy it on. You can use a tang nut or threaded pommel or peened pommel.

Wait until you try to drill the darn hole in a handle with a small diameter bit. It wants to walk off center. Tang in handle shoud be a good fit which means filing for the tang inside the handle or burning the tang in.

Puukkos are a lot of fun and you can get started real cheap.

Any of you guys have more Puukko building suggestions?

There are lots of tutorials on them, too.

Thanks guys...

Now I have an even SILLIER quesition...What does that brass thingy do atthe end of the handle/beginning of the blade?? some knives have it and some dont...I lost that brass thingy that goes on my khuk somehow..Do I need another?

BTW...I am going to Home Depot tomm to see if I can get a chunk of wood on the cheap...How big should I cut it?? (no sense me trashing nice stuff right?)Thinking something flat and simple like one of the guys just did to his Khuk in one of the threads in the main forum...

OHH YEA...I see that most of the Puukkos are handled with a round handle...Is this normal and can ya buy them similar to the Po' Boy handle?? yea I really liked that knife!!! GRRR now I wanna order one of those blades from ragweed!

Sheesh....I can't stay away from this thread...

Got a cool link...

Check out that progression tempered blade...52 at the spine and 63 at the edge!! freakin' cool sounding!

Anyhoo, there's some good Puukko stuff there, pics in the gallery, and a couple tutorials.

I made one of those for a first or second Puukko. It pleased me so much it is my EDC.

If you mean the metal piece between the handle and blade, it is the guard. They usually don't protrude like a bowie. It is most often brass or nickle silver and must fit perfectly. The rest of the handle need not be so precise.

Stabilized wood blocks for the handle can be purchased fron knife suppliers very cheaply. You wan stabilized. While you are at it get a piece of reindeer antler for a spacer or maybe some water buffalo horn. I can post links to tutorials and suppliers if that will help.

I like Puukkos.

Steve,
thanks bro...I just got done reading (gotta wait on the leather to dry ya know?)the tutorial on the website that RWS posted a bit ago...Simpler than I thought and at the same time much more complex...

I couldnt find those blades on ragweed's site, but I think I am going to start with a decent kit...it is the guard and spacer that are throwing me right now...Getting them right is kinda my stumbling block..

You can use antler buttons for spacers too. I got some Cariboo antler buttons off e-bay. Red Flower and I used them for the bolsters on these knives we made for each other. The handles are Oregon Myrtlewood we picked up on a vacation together on the Oregon Coast.

Howard,
I really dig that one on the bottom...Nice wood on both

dangler sheaths?? dont see them much anymore

Traditional for the skandanavian designs, and one of the most comfortable and useful sheath designs around. They move out of the way if you want to sit down, bend, etc.

Ragnar's site says Bergman's book is out of print. Too bad. You might find it in the library. I ordered a few blades, a Morseth, an Ulu, a rough finish Brusletto, and the antlerknife book.
