a doctor's call for HELP - N95 masks

Apparently there's a grassroots effort to help fill this gap with handmade masks. While these won't likely be medical grade, given the circumstances, I suppose they are better than nothing. Google "medical face mask pattern" if you have the equipment and skills to sew some of these. You'll also find that Jo-Ann craft stores are giving away kits to make masks as well as gowns. Other companies like Yellow Birch Outfitters are shifting their production over to masks during this shortage.

Oh yes, us included...we are doing all sorts of unconventional things to take precautions. Unfortunately, some of these attempted masks are not nearly as protective as we would like to think and in many cases make the likelihood of transmission much worse with attempted masks...albeit the intentions are good.

In the general public, a little common sense goes a long ways. In my profession, we are always right in the patient's face within a couple feet or less so if the filter isn't adequate, its the Wild West.

But we are inventive creative people and some heroes will be revealed when all is said in done here, not just on the caregiving end, but in several ways, including stepping up to share resources, and on the creative end of getting other ideas for this protective equipment figured out.

Something in here you like?

The half-facemasks can be sanitized and should provide better protection than a standard 95 with the p100 bayonets on them.

Yep agreed! When this whole thing started to unfold several weeks ago, just as a backup measure I bought more north/honeywell and 3M half masks and p100 filters for my entire staff, although the hospital really didn't want to do it back then. They look scary as hell to patients but we are at that point. I don't know if it still is now, but it was even hard to find p100 filters a few weeks ago. Anyways, I will send you a PM and thanks!!!

Wish I had something to send your way, but my hospital is short on them too. Heck I'm still waiting to find out the test results on a patient a Doc sent our way with no heads up.

I hear you. It is getting more difficult and our screenings are becoming less helpful. We really are having to treat every patient as if they are infected which makes the supply issue even worse. Prayers for your community. Be safe!
