It's time.... Time for me to give my 18 yr old son his first fixed blade, this blade will be carried everyday on his belt. He lives in the high desert and needs a reliable tool that can meet the challenges this environment poses. I personally like leather sheath's over kydex, but am open. The knife should be hip friendly and between 7" and 8.5". I need your ideas, I have come here where real knife people are to get the best ideas. I want this knife to not only be his first fixed blade but something special. It has to be made in USA (except steel) and made by a proud knife maker/company. I want to have pride in the maker as well as the knife. I am not looking to spend thousands but know good quality cost good money. So give me your ideas, what knife do you wish was your first....what knife do wish your father would buy you as a gift.....what's the best edc fixed blade... Thanks for your help

also check out Horsewright Horsewright - his fixed blades are among the better customs imho, wonderful sheaths also for belt carry
Thank you sir for the shoutout!

OP What you are describing is exactly what I do. That size knife and the high desert thing. My knives are made for working cowboys all over but we our selves ranch in an arid area literally bout 7 miles west of the Mojave desert:

Kinda what I do. I would look at my Rodeo models or my Cowboy models. All my knives come with a premium leather sheath fitted and made for that knife:

Anyhoo pretty much what you are looking for is what I do.

Welcome to BladeForums E Epps Dynasty

Have a look at the CPK Carothers Performance Knives. They are members here at BladeForums and here is the direct link to their Hosted Knifemakers Forum right here on BladeForums.

Peruse all the pictures and members posts and you’ll quickly get an idea of the different knives they offer at all different times. Lots of their knives come up for sale here too quite often by members and are even more quickly purchased, you got to be quick on a CPK, they are gobbled up in the blink of your eye (as long as the price is fair on the secondary market).

Best of luck and again welcome to BladeForums.

Take a look at Hogue, Benmade, Cold Steel. What is he going to use it for?
Thank you for the suggestions. It will be used for everyday task, he's a store worker right now. Cutting boxes, opening all sorts of international packages. We live in the rural desert so hiking, dirt biking as well as self defense. Crime is a significant part of daily life these days in a retail setting. Thieves are less likely to interact with someone if they have a very visible weapon. So ease of draw is a big part of the knife as well.

Just gotta say real quick as a newbie. Really thinking about a membership here. Needed help with this very special gift and almost instantly a flood of superb knifes I've never heard of. A small yearly membership fee to have access to this level of knife knowledge is incredible.

If you want something special I can second Horsewright's work. He makes some excellent working knives and he offers great carry sheaths with them.

If those aren't quite what you are looking for there are several makers that are members here that do excellent work also. Welcome to the forums.

I second the Horsewright Horsewright suggestion. As a horseman and high plainsman (Colorado instead of California, though), they speak to me. A Horsewright knife is on my wish list.

Is that 7"-8.5" overall length or bladelength?
