Thinking about what would make a statement in a positive way, and start conversations. I'm thinking of a fairly traditional type of fixed blade with a thin slicing blade, long enough to cut breads, meats, cheeses. But not a breath of tactical design. Natural materials for the handle, perhaps bone or antler or a nice burly wood, but attractive. In a nice belt or dangler sheath, well figured or tooled.

Anything on the market of this type, or would it be a pure custom item?

Some Scandis would do well in this role, or a kind of Gaucho type of knife. Here in my neck of the woods, 5.5" is the longest one can legally go unless among good friends or on own property, but length would be a good thing for best slicing.

Ideas?

Thanks!

I think a Kephart design knife would fit the bill for that. I dunno what production knife fits that outline though.

Well, I don't know. When I think of a Kephart style knife I think of something relatively plain Jane, a pretty utilitarian style of knife. I'm thinking of something more along these lines -

mora makes some nice traditional styled scandi knives.

it's not a fixed blade, but have you considered one of the larger opinel's

My budget is flexible. I could make one using a kit, or buying a blade from a maker and hafting it myself. I love Opinels but they are too plain, and I'd like a fixed. I looked over some of the knives on Ragnar's site, and they started the imaginative juices flowing. A medium sized Leuku with a nice handle would be a possibility.

Yessir, those are some very nice knives. But to get what I want, I think I'd need to get a bare blade and haft it the way I want. However, I think I prefer the Gaucho/Argentinian knives for this purpose over the Scandi types.

Anybody know where I could find a source for a bare blade?

you can also check customknife.com for blanks.

have you tried contacting one of the custom makers on this forum?

I've checked out several sites which have been mentioned, and while many have chef-style blades which are the correct size and would work, I'm leaning toward a hidden tang blade rather than full tang. Haven't found a blank in the configuration I like in a stick tang.

I haven't contacted anybody as yet. I'm certain there are many who could make just what I'm thinking of.

I picked this one up on the Buck web special last week and it's going to be a Feast knife.

Jantz has laminated VG10 kitchen blades with a stick tangs in a few different sizes.

I'm not sure about the carving knife from your post above, but carvers are usually way bigger than 5.5" if you're trying to stick to that limit.
