Hello all, I'm currently looking at broadening my knife making skills up and doing more then just railroad spike knives. I have made a couple hundred of them but now I'm interested in making a Bowie knife. I only make knives in my spare time, for myself, family and friends.

I have been looking at Bowie knives and my question is are there really any downsides to not adding a brass bolster but making it apart of the blade shape itself? I have always liked full tang knives and I've been hammering around the idea of doing a cut out of a guard with the blade itself but I don't see to many of them. I came across about eight 5-6 foot circular saw mill blades I will be using for the knife itself. I have a couple of examples of what I have in mind, but I'd like some input and maybe a few pictures of more examples if anyone has them. I'll try and post a few pics of my work and 2 of the examples of the Bowie knives. Thanks!

personally, I'm not a fan of that look on a full size bowie. A finger choil to keep your hand from slipping up is as close as I come to this type of thing. I think a large knife looks better with a slotted guard, if it has a guard at all, but that's just me. It's also not that hard to do, so don't let the learning curve dissuade you.
