Tortorich hammer poll hawk with my kydex blade cover lashed to my new Falcon II pack. The hawk really stands out in this picture, but nobody seemed to notice it when we checked into a hotel on the coast last weekend. Doesn't everyone take a hawk on a romantic weekend get-away? When I pointed it out to Sophia I got "I didn't notice that" and barely an eye roll. Click on a pic for a larger version. That last one is particularly deserving of a full size view.

This is kind of a proof of concept edge cover. My foam is breaking down and really shows on the tan Kydex. I carry this hawk on my dual sport motorcycle so my idea of a secure sheath covers possible high speed get-offs and multiple tumbles. The edge cover has a good snap to it so the the thumb push is needed to get it off. The paracord wraps around the bit to hold the cover on mechanically, and it keeps the top of the cover from opening up for added security.

The slot for the knot.

Detail of the welded cable pattern. I really like it. Reminds me of a dragon fly's wing. You can also see the hammon to the left.

Dude that is a great set up. I really like the blade cover and the cable damascus is just kick ass. Great haft also and a real nice pack to boot .Hell I like everything can I have it:D

Robert, is my combo sheath too sexy for the coast ??? Glad that you are enjoying the hawk..

Thats a lovely looking tool.

I don't think that many people will think that its what it is, as the handle is not of the traditional shape usually seen on axes and hatchets.

Same goes for the head, and that a great cover you made.

Certainly a tool to be proud to call your own, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the props; Louis does great work. After a little more use in the woods I flipped the hawk over. Much easier to get the hawk out without taking off the pack. Just unclip the strap, pull the head down-forward-up in an easy arc and Bob's your uncle!

Can you elaborate enough for me to duplicate it???
I'm thinking this finish would be totally cool on the head of my next hawk, with Q's 'torch burnt' wood finish on the haft to go with it...

Drool, drool, drool... :D

I wasn't sure if you were asking about the etch that brings out the pattern, or the pattern itself. Sorry if I'm belaboring the obvious! The actual pattern is integral to the steel. It starts out as an actual piece of multistrand wire rope/cable that is forge welded into a billet. After being forged/ground into a hawk head or whatever, the completed piece is then chemically etched to make the pattern more visible.
