A few hikes on the west coast

Hi All,

I spent last week in British Columbia, where I was a groomsman in a friend’s wedding. My girlfriend and I took the opportunity to bookend the trip with as much outdoors wandering as we could, and this included hikes along the Fraser River and a terrific climb up Stawamus Chief, plus some rambling north of Vancouver (we were going to do the Grouse Grind, but the trail was closed).

Every time I make it out to BC, I am amazed at how beautiful it is. Pitdog - you and the other west-coasters have it good! I have added “find an excuse to move to BC” to my permanent to-do list.

Selecting gear for this trip was interesting. With multiple connecting flights both ways, I was reluctant to put one of my usual custom hiking knives in my checked luggage - I have had a few things pilfered in the past, and it would be a shame to lose one of my JKs to a ‘baggage handling error’. Also, I figured that the trails we would be hiking would probably be busier than my usual stomping grounds along the Niagara Escarpment (which was true) and that even the comparatively secluded trails would be subject to fire bans (which was true), so I didn’t see the need for a big blade. I wound up packing my Grohmann no. 2, my Wave, and my JK fire kit. Only the no. 2 saw any use, and that was just for food prep on the trails and prying at a bit of fatwood. So it wasn’t much of a trip as far as cutlery was concerned!

But it was a spectacular trip for scenery, hiking, and such. I thought I would share a few pics with you guys.

First, my trusty Grohmann No. 2:

The forests along the coast are LUSH:

And the marshes and rivers are pretty neat, too:

But I’m particularly partial to the mountains.

Here’s two shots from the base of Stawamus Chief, one looking out, and one looking up:

More to come ...

A bit of a drop-off:

A shot from the second peak of Stawamus Chief, looking out over Howe Sound (Squamish is below the frame, to the right). I used my camera’s ‘panorama’ setting for this one, and this is the first time that it has knit the three photos together seamlessly. Neat, eh?

A few more views from the top, looking south(ish), West, and North respectively.

We were lucky to have dramatic skies, which made for a nice breeze and great photography. From the peak, we could see weather moving in from the north, so we descended pretty quickly. The top portion of the hike is rather intense and steep, and it requires the use of chains bolted to the rock for grips. We didn’t want to navigate that area in the rain! We made good time on the way down, and decided to drive up to Whistler along the Sea-to-Sky highway in order to enjoy the views and partake in some sockeye salmon and local microbrew.

All things considered, it was a terrific trip.

Thanks for looking!

Oh, and by the way - I made the cake knife for the wedding. It went over pretty well. Here’s a shot from just before I finished the final sanding on the blade.

Mentor:

2 things - first of all, I was hiking on the Bruce Trail the other day - where the hell were you????

Secondly, since nobody else will ask, where's the picture of the girlfriend?

Doc

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Doc, whereabouts were you on the trail? I'm going to hit up the Beaver Valley section this weekend, if I can manage to polish off the stack of things on my to-do list. Anyway, hope you had a great hike.

As for my girlfriend, we're both a tad camera shy, at least when it comes to online photos. You'll have to trust me when I say that she's a keeper. ;)

All the best,

- Mike

Terrific. Reminds me of some of the spots in Milton or near the Singhampton caves.

Some truly stunning photos there! All are great really but I think I like the one with the stains on the rocks from the water flow...that's a cool shot and I'm just odd that way :o

Yup, that's BC alright! Great pictures, I love seeing other people enjoying and appreciating our beautiful little province.

Sucks that the Grind was closed! It's a fun hike, and there are some gorgeous views of Vancouver from the top (and cold beer!).

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing. British Columbia is one of the cleanest most beautiful places I had ever been. I went there in 92-93 while in the Navy. Thanks for reminding me of what a wonderful place it was; is.

Mentor those are some great pictures. I am stealing a few for my screen saver if thats ok with you.

Great photos!!! That hike up the Chief is sweet isn't it? I always take an off day from skiing when we do a Whistler trip to make that hike. When I lay belly down to peek over the edge, I think of a photo I saw of a guy riding a unicycle along that same edge. Makes my hands and feet sweat for sure.

By all means, tonym. I have been borrowing desktop imagery from W&SS posts for years.
