Hi All,
I spent last week in British Columbia, where I was a groomsman in a friends wedding. My girlfriend and I took the opportunity to bookend the trip with as much outdoors wandering as we could, and this included hikes along the Fraser River and a terrific climb up Stawamus Chief, plus some rambling north of Vancouver (we were going to do the Grouse Grind, but the trail was closed).
Every time I make it out to BC, I am amazed at how beautiful it is. Pitdog - you and the other west-coasters have it good! I have added find an excuse to move to BC to my permanent to-do list.
Selecting gear for this trip was interesting. With multiple connecting flights both ways, I was reluctant to put one of my usual custom hiking knives in my checked luggage - I have had a few things pilfered in the past, and it would be a shame to lose one of my JKs to a baggage handling error. Also, I figured that the trails we would be hiking would probably be busier than my usual stomping grounds along the Niagara Escarpment (which was true) and that even the comparatively secluded trails would be subject to fire bans (which was true), so I didnt see the need for a big blade. I wound up packing my Grohmann no. 2, my Wave, and my JK fire kit. Only the no. 2 saw any use, and that was just for food prep on the trails and prying at a bit of fatwood. So it wasnt much of a trip as far as cutlery was concerned!
But it was a spectacular trip for scenery, hiking, and such. I thought I would share a few pics with you guys.
First, my trusty Grohmann No. 2:
The forests along the coast are LUSH:
And the marshes and rivers are pretty neat, too:
But Im particularly partial to the mountains.
Heres two shots from the base of Stawamus Chief, one looking out, and one looking up:
Partway up the Chief:
More to come ...
