A Few Knives I've Been Working On

haven't you been a busy beaver.
You blew me away with the first knife. I'm going to have to go back and absorb the other ones now.

.
The next knife is a "Stars and Stripes" Hunter. Stars because of the blade and Stripes because of the Tiger Stripe Maple. This past Veterans day my family and I hosted a Hammer-in for our local Homeschooling group. We had many things planed for the day including a Powder Mosaic forging demo that I did, a Soap making demo by my Mom and a demo on how to make a propane forge by my Dad. We also had a Tomahawk throwing contest and a Cutting Competition. I made a competition knife and gave it to the winner of the cutting competition. We invited two friends of mine to come and do demos. One is a Blacksmith/Knifemaker on the side, he brought a coal forge and forged out a few blades, he also let people have a try at it. The other friend that came did a demo on cleaning and tanning deer hide. We had a very good turn out with about 150 people that came, many of those being their kids. This was the second year we did this and we might do it again next year. This was a knife I gave away for the Barbecue cook-of we had. The handle is Tiger Stripe Maple and the blade is forged from 1080, 1095, Pure Nickel and 4800E Powder. This is the first powder mosaic I have made. During my demo I made another powder mosaic and it came out better than I anticipated with less distortion than the first. (I'll have to make a knife out of it sometime) I went with the "Stars and Stripes" theme because I thought it would go good with Veterans day which was the day of the Hammer-in.

That's excellent!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Kyle, everyone of them is awesome!! excellent work yet again. Photo's pretty good too

Kyle,
I'd like to compliment you on your work, but anything I have to say would fail to do justice to the beautiful pieces you have produced.
That first gentleman's hunter is as elegant as any knife I have seen. The colors and textures are wonderfully compatible, speaking to me of wood-paneled drawing rooms, good brandy and cigar smoke. The design and finish are, for me, just about perfect. And as I admire Caleb's photos I have an overwhelming desire to touch the wood, the blued steel and the bronze, and feel the heft of the whole package in my hands.
You do beautiful work, sir.
And yes your other 3 examples are also worthy of praise, but that hunter knocks me out.
Thanks for sharing.

Kyle,
After reading about your share-the-skills party you make me wish MO was closer to VT.
What a wonderful way to perpetuate and cultivate crafts, skills and artistry.
It crosses my mind that it takes a gentleman to create a true "gentleman's hunter"!

Kyle,
I agree with most here that the gentleman's hunter is simply beautiful. The blend of colors and graceful lines on it just beg to be held. The other three reveal several clues as to what to expect in the future....mosaic damascus, slip jpint folders and engraving...wow, I can hardly wait.

It was a pleasure being invited to Kyle's family fall hammer-in. We live close by and Kathy and I spent the afternoon and it was just great seeing all the fun activities available for all. The Royer's are to be commended for providing such an enjoyable day for all.

A comment on the Stars and Stripes hunter; the nice lady that won the BBQ cook-off was still holding her own when we had to leave. Her husband was trying awfully hard to lay claim to Kyle's hunter she had just won.

Plus, Kyle didn't mention how well his 5160 competition cutter held up. 13 of 16 competitors used Kyle's knife (I think he sharpened it three times during the contest), and it held up very well!

Really like that slipjoint, Kyle...plus, the new makers mark.

Excellent work all around, but this one really does it for me: Clean, elegant and balanced-looking, with a 'just right' blend of flow and contrast from point to pommel.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone!!!

I am very glad you all like the Gentleman's Hunter. I think I'll have to do a Bowie with that same color scheme sometime???:D

I like building folders very much. I'll try to have a Slip-Joint at the Little Rock Show this February and something I think you all will like very much that I won't talk about further at this time ;):D

Thanks everyone!

Kyle

Hi Joe,

It was a pleasure to have you here. I am sorry that we didn't have more time to talk.

Also I should mention the lady that won the Barbecue contest had never made barbecue before the Hammer-in, she found out about the prize knife a few weeks before and started looking all over the web for recipes. She found one that had GREAT reviews and then set out to find the perfect pork for the recipe, which ended up being a not so easy task for where she lives, about 10 miles east of our house. She said that she had to go to four different little towns to find what she wanted. The lady did all this for her husband who wanted the knife very badly, which I think is very neat.

Thanks for looking everyone!

Kyle

that first hunter is my favorite, just spot on.

Yeah! Do you know how hard it is to build every single knife so it will fit everyone's hands that are about five times smaller than mine.:confused:;)

That hunter is sweet!!!! You are inspiring me to finally learn how to use this old school rust blue solution that I have had for 6 months.:D:thumbup:

Kyle, They are all so very nice but that first hunter does it for me.
Great images from Caleb.
