Well, this wasn't anything nearly as glorious as Ken's antelope and elk hunt, but I got to do a hog hunt last weekend.

We helped some rice farmers in south Texas decrease the population a little. These hogs can do an amazing amount of damage to a crop. If you've never seen what a herd of 25 hogs can do overnight, you'd be amazed. These poor farmers are having a terrible time and a losing battle trying to keep hogs out of their fields.

There were 4 hunters, we ended up with about 25 hogs in 2 nights. These are my "redneck" buddies (they mean business) lol. I'm the one with the big
goofy grin

Sorry for the terrible pics, nobody had a good camera

We didn't get any huge ones. This one probably went about 250 pounds, but was a fairly young hog judging by the cutters :

Hope to squeeze in one more hunt before rifle season opens up for whitetail

oh man.

I am salivating.

Awesome Eli, looks like you had a blast.

archery season starts Saturday here.

I am envious. I have always wanted to hunt wild pig. I get five wild pig tags per year, and have yet to find an opportunity to use them.

LOL, there's no such thing as a tag down here... We're really getting absolutely overun with them. There's no game limitations or seasons whatsoever. It makes for some fun hunting, and pretty good eating.

It was good to get some meat back in the freezer as we had lost most everything with Hurricane Ike.

Good hunt! Those are some destructive critters for sure.

Looks like you've got a 12Ga and one guy's got a 45-70 or .450 Marlin. Is the AR a .223? If so, how did the round do on the hogs?

Thanks for the pics.

Great pics and a nice haul. I noticed your mate with the Inzer T-shirt, does he powerlift?

NICE:thumbup:

No season:eek: No limit:eek:

Haven't hunted hog myself but I can see Texas is the place.:D

Thanks for sharing

Hey xaman there is no way you can tell people how much fun it is to help eradicate hogs if they have not done it is there. I know you had a blast!!!! And like you said helping out farmers they are so thankful, and when i am reloading and trying different bullets you can see how they perform, and with the litters they have its never ending. Congrat's to you and your friends and thanks for the pic's!!:thumbup:

yep, a 12 gauge, a 45-70, a scoped 7mag, and the AR was a 308 (which did really good.)

the 12 gauge did well on small hogs up to 20 yards, but couldn't stop them at longer distances.
I'm going back to a marlin 444 next time.

Thanks for the nice pics.

I know you already know that it's all about shot placement. If you can pop them between the eye and the ear. they will drop in their tracks. And of course with teeth like those, the last thing you want to do is follow an injured one into the bush.

They can turn a pasture into what looks like a plowed paddock overnight. :D

Great pictures xaman.

I can tell a funny story that happened to me many years ago, I was sitting at home alone watching TV one night when all hell broke loose. A wild pig had for some reason got under the house, the dogs must have spotted it and rushed under and grabbed it. :D

There was grunting and squealing galore going on under the house; even dust was starting to come up through the floor boards.

I crawled under with a torch and managed to grab the pig by the back leg and every time I tried to pull him out the dogs would pull him back under by the ears. :D

I eventually had to stick him under the house to make the dogs let go.
Cheers,
Ian.

Awesome! That looks like a boatload of fun! Man I wish there were that many hogs around here. I run into about 5-6hogs out of 5-6 hunting trips :grumpy: I need to go to texas one of these days.

BTW, the 444Marlin is my favorite Big Bore Levergun. My 444 GuideGun shoots 320-340gr WFN Hardcast bullets and do about 1.5" groups out to 100yds with a 4X scope.

I can almost taste that spit-roast pork - my mouth's watering!

Great hunt!

Nice hunting. My grandpa had a really funny "hog hunting" story. He had a farm in Washington, many years ago, their hillbilly neighbors had a bunch of hogs right next to my grandfather's alphalpha field. They kept refusing to fix their broken down hog pen fence. My grandpa would get up in the morning and a huge patch of his field would be rooted up. He warned them several times and they told him they did not care, so he told them the next morning he was going to go out with his shotgun and take care of the problem if they would not.

He went out with his browning auto shotgun loaded up with buck shot and blasted about 5 or 6 of them. He took his front end loader and drove it back over to the property line, and dumped them back over the hog pen fence and told the neighbors "problem solved". I guess they were in no mood to argue with a crotchety farmer with a loaded shot gun. They went out and fixed the fence that day.

looks like you had a fantastic hunt, congrats! i hunted hogs a couple time about 70 miles south of san antonio, it was a blast and i would love to do it again, too cool!

did i say congrats?

Here's the tool of choice for me. Marlin 444, 265 grain Hornady Leverevolution, scout scope (variable 2-7x)
