the dachshund is a breed ive always had a soft spot for, my buddy has a couple minis and he not only shows em but he hunts with them as well. hes brought my pups sire out to the farm and that little guy hits the ground hunting...fun little dog. its a bit of a change of pace for me, ive always hunted coon and coyote with my show dog American Pit Bull terriers, but ive never had a little hound of my own so when i was offered a pup last weekend, i jumped on the chance. i took the fiesty male of the litter and im planning on getting him started next spring. my male dog Riot has really taken a liking to the little guy, but my bitch Ladybug not so much, so im keeping them two seperated.

well here he is, Woody D's Pee-Wee Herman....

We had a mini, red short hair. He had all his hunt drive still hard wired as many lines of dachshunds still do if you are wanting that. He loved to hunt everything...chipmunks, rabbits, pheasants, cows, horses...probably would have been great on African big game but we never got that far out of pocket. That stinker died from white line fever, he caught it from a Chevy Suburban wheel. We cried like little kids that day as we buried him. Good hunting dogs are one thing but when you have one that is your family dog and goes to work with you then you get real attached. Thanks for the pics of your new pup....he looks like big trouble in a small package. I hope he bring you many smiles and laughs.

What's not to like about wiener dogs? Looks like he'll be a good hunter and family pet, too.

Mighty cute pics there. :) Those brought a smile to this crabby face.

Weren't those little guys bred to hunt badgers...? I think I read that somewhere... Quite a breed, for such a small package...

The full size dachsies were bred to dig out badgers, trail wounded large game and most of all to burrow under blankets and keep your feet warm. The little versions do all those as well and look so darn cute.

My best friend used to live near the ocean in an old local fishing community (steveston) and would bring a case of beer, a lantern and his dachsund to old abandoned warehouses and a cannery and "buddy" would kill 10 to 20 rats a night. Would even stop, cock an ear and listen then run to a clutter pile and root out a rat nest with babies. He would pick each one up, crunch its skull and drop it.

He had to bring a bottle of soapy water and a towel as he would sometimes festoon himself shaking apart a big rat!!

theyre very capable little dogs if you dont allow them to put on the weight.
i have a couple buddys who've gave me some crap for getting a dachshund. most folks have never seen one that was a real "working" dog, and im hoping he makes em eat crow.
i took him out to the farm yesterday and the little guy gave a couple molehills some hell. he didnt move alotta dirt, but he sure did try LOL

Ours would get after chipmunks real well but they are quick to go to the burrow so we put an old section of downspout on the ground where they ran. It was not hard for him to get them in there thinking they were in a good spot. Little Killa Dilla would bark his 'We got you now' bark and I would raise the tube up vertical and shake out the chipmunk. A couple of good shakes and chipmunk's batteries wore out. That dog would strut like a rooster for the next half an hour...we really got a kick out of his fire and spunk. Then in the evening he became an arm rest between me and my Mrs.

That is a really good looking pup. I have one on my lap as I type this that looks a lot
like it just older.
Jim

My parents have a long-haired dachshund and he is a professional pinecone and leaf killer haha.

On a side note, your sig is from Tool's "Rosetta Stoned" right? Great song. Hell, great album

Congrats, looks like they get along well. we just picked up a beagle. She doesn't howl (thumbs up) but she has alot of energy. We just finished her novice obedience training and failed. She just could not stay down long enough.
Again, congrats on your new addition to your family!

thanks for the compliments everyone. ive been working with the little guy around the house...after letting him chew on a big piece of hide, i take it away and put him in another room. then i drag the hide starting where he was last chewing on it, to another room and hide it. if i bring him back in the first room, that liitle hound will track that piece of hide until he finds it. being indoors i know its not gonna teach the little guy much when it comes to "real" hunting, im just hoping he is learning that his natural sense of smell will lead him to the prize, and his success rate is suprisingly high.

little PeeWee is doing very well in his potty training, and is fitting in very well...and man is he a LOUD little guy. LOL
my old dog Riot gets tired of the endless puppy energy, but Ladybug being only 2, still has alotta pup left in her and when she got past the jealousy of a new 'baby" in the house, she absolutely LOVES the little guy.

and this pic was not staged, she cuddles with him whenever she can LOL...PeeWee and the 'bug

I have a dog that was bred specifically for hunting rabbits. A basset hound. It's nose is second only to the bloodhound.

I like dachshunds, too. I've been thinking about getting a beagle. I've always been a fan of hounds.

Dachshunds are serious little badasses. I know two different people who have had ear lobes torn off by them. Unrelated incidents. Troof.
