My 3 night river trip turned into a one nighter unfortunately, but it was still a blast! A little cold at night, and windy the second day. I got to put my new Krein Bushcraft and my GB small forest axe to good use. We made camp late, and I was too busy gathering firewood with my axe to worry about setting up camp. I wanted to spend some more time testing out some new gear, but I was busy with the fire keeping my wife warm. Again, I was too impatient in the beginning in collecting firewood, and I couldn't get a fire started using a 15 minute road flare! Yikes! I was axe happy, so I just needed some smaller stuff and got the fire going in a few minutes w/ my peanut lighter. I also used a pocket chainsaw, which I love, but I would have rather had something better. A 7" or larger saw with a good handle would have been nice. I think I'll save the pocket saw as a backup option or for larger, less common stuff. I couldn't be more pleased with my GB and Krein combo though!

New tarp and bivy (first time using it, had to do the tarp in the dark so it didn't work out to well)

Great pics. Thanks for posting them. How about a pic of your psk kit contents?

Up here to take a river trip you would need to chop a few miles of ice first then paddle like hell before it froze up again.:D

Glad you guys had fun! My girlfriend and I went camping last night to bring in the new year at Sipsey River in Bankhead National Forest. It got pretty cold last night and very windy today. I spent a while choping firewood with my Gerber Sport Axe which worked very well and used my old Gerber LMF for smaller kindling. I used a Light my Fire-Firesteel and cotton balls with vasoline on them to start the fire. It took two tries to get it going but most everything was wet or very damp. We had alot of fun and had some good ol' MRE's for breakfast:) Sorry no pics forgot the digital cam.

Great pics, looks like you had a good time !

Did you finish up sleeping under the tarp or in the tent ?

I ended up sleeping under the tarp in my bivy. It got down to around 15F with not much wind. So a moderate night. It was my first time sleeping with that system, which I liked fairly well. If I had set the tarp up right, it would have been much more comfortable. I didn't have enough room to sit up, and since the underside of the tarp was mega-frosty, I got wet in the morning. The new bivy (Cabela's XPG) and sleeping bag (Northface cat's meow) was a great combo. I made a liner too for a little extra warmth.

I'm still trying to decide if I liked it as a winter option. I think I slept maybe 3 hours, but I usually don't sleep well camping unfortunately.

Wish we had armadillo's up here in Canada... :D :D what a neat animal.

Thanks for the report.

Excellent! Sorry you had to cut your trip short but.... Jacks Fork reminds me a lot of parts of the Buffalo River. Glad you got to get out so early in the year.

Camping on river gravel bars presents so interesting problems in the winter. Think about the large amount of moisture in the gravel below your tarp. A full groundsheet of some type might have helped. This is one reason why I use one under my tents on the gravel bars in winter.

Codger

Nice pics and looks like a lot of fun. Even though the trip was shortened, just be happy your girl will do all of that stuff with you, I'd have to bribe mine with a couple of those "gossip" magazines ;).
