Hello, I am about to make a purchase, my first in a while, and would like some advice. I am having a tough time choosing between the following:

Columbia River My Tighe:
http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=CR1090

Kershaw Speed Bump Ken Onion Akulon:
http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=KS1595

Kershaw Ken Onion Tanto Storm + Kershaw Ken Onion Chive:

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=KS1470TST
Tanto ^

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=KS1600
Chive ^

Any suggestions on which to choose? Also, the Kershaw Ken Onion Tanto Storm and the Kershaw Ken Onion Chive would be one purchase. Thanks in advance.

Brutus, first off welcome to the forum. Second I appreciate many of your choices, and I am sure you will get some solid advice from many members here on BF's.

Also, if you have any other suggestions within the $70 price range that will also be helpful.

Try to find Spec/Speed Bump. From what you just list I will choose Speed Bump myself, because of good steel, good grip and good lock.

Thanks, Vassili.

Nothing in particular. Self defense for one, which is why I chose knifes with atleast a 3" blade (the Kershaw Chive would just be for carrying around in a pocket) and auto assist. A good general work knife with a sharp blade that keeps a good enough edge to not need sharpening more then once every few days and with solid construction. Also, I want the knifes to be small enough to clip onto a pocket but large enough to be useful. And just for the record, I did choose knifes atleast partially because they are nice to look at, I am not going to lie. These are just a few that I saw within a day or so, and I know Kershaw is a well known brand. I am not a knife expert, which is why I asked here.

Kershaw Leek or Cyclone; the Chive I think is a little too small.

Benchmade Griptilian 551

Spyderco Endura 4 Waved Version

I'd stay away from the CRKT knives; in the 70.00 range you can buy better blade steel than CRKT typically offers.

Hope this helps!

The Griptilian is a bit out of my price range and the Spyderco doesn't have assisted open. Would you suggest the Speed bump in my first post (seems to be what people are suggesting so far) or the Kershaw Leek?

Ah, I see the difference. That actually looks pretty cool. It doesn't open faster per se, it is just open before it is all of the way out of the pocket. Do you know of any websites that might have reviews of knifes? The Spyderco Waved and the Kershaws look pretty even. Do you know which can hold an edge better or which is more durable?

Yes, it opens as it's drawn!

The Kershaws and Spydercos in the price range we're talking about are very well made knives. I'd say about equal in durability. Both excellent.

Then there's blade steel. Well, you can read a lot about bladesteel, but IMO the Spyderco VG-10 is superior to the particular Sandvik being used in many of the Kershaws, in terms of taking a sharper edge and holding it better. Also, Spydercos are well known for being very, very sharp right out of the box.

But - on the Kershaws made with S30V steel - well there you'll have pretty much of a toss-up between those two. (Meaning S30V and VG-10.) They are both great blade steels.

As for websites with reviews of knives, this webite comes first to mind.
Use the search function and you can read knife reviews all day. Some reviews are very cursory; others are very in-depth. They run the spectrum.

Good chatting with you Brutus013.
It is however now 4 AM and I'm going to hit the hay.
Good night.

Night. I have heard that both Spydercos and Kershaws are very sharp out of the box. I guess it is a toss up between the three. The Kershaw ET looks like a very cool toy, but the Speed Bump seems like it would work better for actual work, and the Spyderco is making the decision even harder. If I did not have a spending limit I would get all three, but sadly I am limited to one. Thanks for the help.

I personally like the innovative style of the Kershaw ET. Nice looks, good function and great steel (Sandvik 13C26).

The Speed bump is also a good choice imo.

I own about 10 Kershaw knives , they are all high quality so you won't be making a mistake regardless of what you buy...

The Storm II and Speed/Spec bump are my favorites, they both have a similarly curved blade ( I have the non-tanto Storm II) and are full sized pocket knives. The Storm II is an excellent bargain and while not AO, it is defiantly worthy of your consideration. Don't let the price fool you it's a well built knife and you'll try to figure out how Kershaw can offer a US made knife at that price. It does have a "flipper" so it can be opened pretty fast and the frame lock is very secure. It's a little heavy , but slim so clipped to a pocket is fine.

The "bump" I have is basically a Spec Bump with a Sandvik blade. The one you selected has a molded handle, outside of that they are the same, dimensionally. The Speed bump is also an excellent bargain, but as Vassili mentioned if you can still find the Speed/Spec bump, it's a super bargain...

Also consider the Blur , Walmart carries them with the Tanto Edge.

I also agree the Chives/Scallions are a little small....

I think I am going with the Speed Bump in my first post. They are in stock, and has everything I was looking for. It was between the Speed Bump and the ET, and the Speed Bump is a few bucks less expensive, so I am going for it.

Great job of choosing among excellent knives without buying all of them.

Please let us know your thoughts on the Speed Bump.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Storm tanto or the Akulon.

I have a Storm II and its flawless. For the money its a super deal. I think the knife screams for a higher price tag personally. I thought it was priced wrong at first and I really like the blade steel.
