A first?

The delica 4 is about half the price of the caly 3 but it has the same steel, similar shape, and weighs a little less. If this is your first spyderco I would recommend you try the delica first. You'll get one hell of a good knife at half the price and it will give you a chance to find out if Spyderco's are for you. With Spyderco you either get it, or you don't. I knew the first time I picked one up that Spyderco was for me, but some people are polar opposites and can't stand the funny shapes and thumb holes and such. Personally I rarely carry anything else because my Spyderco can do anything I could ever need or expect a pocket knife to do. they tend to be slimmer and lighter than other brands without sacrificing strength or durability. besides, at $40 for a delica I'm not terribly worried about abusing the hell out of them. Even so i've never had one fail on me.

Delica 4, hm? Yes if I do get a spyderco it will be my first. Sounds like a good knife and it sounds like you're satisfied. The Delica is going into concideration.

Anybody have a Lone Wolf Harsey T1? I found it going for $60 at one website. It looks like a hardcore folder for those of us that cannot afford the T2 At the moment.

I've seen lots of positive comments about the Boker Trance - about $22.50 on the bay.

Fiber reinforced nylon handle,
AUS-8 blade, frame lock and pocket clip.
Blade length: 2 3/4“.
Overall length: 6 1/4“.
Weight: 3.2 oz.

Delica is indeed great but to my taste the Caly 3 is on a higher plane of general sturdiness, a benchmark for utility knives. Anyway, these days I am more interested in stylish knives that are respectable cutters as well. Here are 3 "different" suggestions.

Coming back to the question: "Price I'd say nothing over $100. Small folder for EDC" I would opt for on of these:

- a lovely compact damascus Mcusta with staminawood handle inlay. More specifically, this beauty can be had for $99.95 at the damascusknifestore site:

- or, one of my faves (and indeed I recommended it already a few times) is less known but it is light, well made with a good blade and nice ergonomics and last but not least: it looks 10 times better than all those polymer handled utilitarian knives. The Eka Masur can be had for $47.95 incl. nice elk skin sheath at worldknives:

- The compact Fallkniven U2 is an incredible cutter (there is a video of someone splicing a hair with it) featuring high end steel. Elegant stuff, my only complaint is that it has a polymer handle but the Fallkniven folders with wood inlay are on the wrong side of $100:

Go for a Griptilian 550HG. Don't get serrations. They are for people who don't do any homework. If you do wanna go for a smaller knife, go with the Caly III. I have a UK Pen knife, and have handled the Caly III, and prefer the simplicity (& USA make) of the UKPK....as you can see in the pics, they are SUPER similar. But for a newbie, you prolly think you "need" a lock. To knock it down half the price, I would go for a Spyderco Native... all the knife you could ever need for under $50, USA made.

The Kershaw Blurs I have handled have REALLY knocked my socks off for the price... and there made in the good 'ol U.S. of A.

Out of the knives you have mentioned, I only have experience with the griptillian. It is an awesome knife; it usually comes sharp, the handle is ergonomic(all be it bulky), and it has the amazing axis lock(the deal breaker that has put benchmades above spydies in my book). You wont be disapointed. Oh and it is made in the USA if that matters to you, you will be helping the economy.

Serrations are for people that like serrations...they're a completely personal modification to a knife, and though some people don't like them, there are plenty of us that do like them, and have found them useful...way to add something objective to this discussion...

On another note, I think the perfect knife based on what you're looking for is the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian, anything in the 556 model line (serrations, non-serrations, coated blades, different colored handles, etc.).

the griptilian is a great design but until they come up with some slimmer handles i can't stand to carry one, it feels round and bulky in my pocket where my flat spyderco knives vanish and can't even be felt. I would love to see benchmade come up with some nice slim g10 or FRN handles for the griptilian line though, then it would be a serious contender for my EDC.

......I would recommend you try the delica first. You'll get one hell of a good knife at half the price and it will give you a chance to find out if Spyderco's are for you. Ive carried a few Spydercos (Enduras, Delicas) throughout the years and like them, but knew there was something missing.. I didnt know what, but everything was good but there something that I couldnt put my finger on. Well now that I make a bit more $$ than I did back then, I decided I wanted an Emerson. Production Emersons have G-10 scales. The first time I put my hand on one, it was like an epihpany.

Thats what was missing.

I dont like Xytel or FRN, but didnt realize it till I handled some G-10. Try to get your hands on something made out of G-10 before you decide. I wont buy another "tactical" folder unless its shod in G-10.

Thanks everyone. I decided to go with the Delica 4 by Spyderco. I'm going to pick it up tommarrow :D. Pretty exited about it. This will be a birthday present to myself. :)

My Thanks,
