Not sure if this is the correct sub-forum, but it looks to be, so here goes:
Enjoy the progress of this build;
A is for my first name, Fisher is my desceased biological fathers last name. while I've carried my stepfathers name for over 30 years, I'm paying homage to my roots and history, and A. Fisher makes a great logo. just watch
Designed as a fighting knife
9" OAL, .200" thickness
compound and saber grinds
High quality European origin D2 tool steel
Design based on simple geometry to keep piercing point in line with grip, and pull into slashes therefore increasing the angle of attack for the blade
I will be using cryo for heat treatment. As a former tool and die maker, heat treating was everyday work. Nothing scary about D2 to me...
This will serve as a build thread, enjoy the process.
Ideas become CAD sketches:
Research into coatings
Prototypes for grind testing and ergonomic changes. 4140 garbage:
More CAD work for creating scale designs to move over to waterjet. The Micarta and G10 scales will be WJ cut, the wood will be cut by hand... time consuming.
Nesting. Can pull this together to save more material.
Cutting out .5" D2 blanks. these will be split via wire EDM.
Now on to Wire EDM, machining, heat treat, grinding, etc.
here's some pics of random things I've made that I can show.
Wine rack
Titanium...
Cufflinks
Ring holder
TV stand from cold rolled and Jatoba.hidden shelves hide 60ft of XLR cable
and me!
Some process Pics:
Plan everything
Program
Roughing
Finish pass:
Fresh off the mill
Balance
Profiles. Will CNC these in future runs. I wanted to do half of this knife 'traditionally' for the first batch. New and Old.
Hand smoothing
Color COUNTS. Picking handle material for duty knives
Heat treat ready
Post
Testing QA. The magnified pic is where I impact tested the edge into 6061T6 to check for deformation or chipping.
60Rc
Grinding hardened D2 is a PITA
Test fitting WJ scale blanks
just one scale liner idea. Getting Black G10, this bronze liner, and acid dip blade
On the bench almost finished. Added some 'lines' where the index finger sits to help aid grip
Textured grip, before acid dip, edge, and blackened stainless hardware
