With the Spydie Military on my wish list I read as much as I can because I cannot find one in any Anchorage store to look at. I read an old post (I can't find it again) that said the Military has a single liner for the lock side and a quick look at the Spyderco homepage confirms this. Have any of you Military owners had any problems that you can attribute to the single liner design? I know Buck has changed the Odyssey from one to two liners because of flexing problems (I know, bad example because of the plastic backbone). I doubt there is any problems because I don't see any current posts regarding this but I'm still curious if the G-10 is stiff enough for the linerlock design.

I have two militarys one plain and one serrated. I have had no problem with the nested liner and have not heard of anyone else having a problem either. Some people had voiced concern, but I believe this is more a perception problem than anything else. The G-10 that Spyderco uses is a tighter weave than most. The G-10 has very little flex. I am sure Sal or someone can answer this question better than me, but the military has under gone extensive testing. Also both my militarys have never failed the spine whack test.

Hello, i own a military, ATS-34/the newer version full serrated. Let me tell ya somthin, get the knife, it is my favorite folder, the 6 weave G-10 is so friggin strong, mine does not flex at all, at all. The finish and construction are awesome, very solid, the nested liner lock is stainless-no wearing, the clip is rad, the overall shape of the military is awesome, mine did not fail , and so far i gave it 40 hard spine whacks on the spine of the blade against my formica drawing desk. After several months, the liner did not wear, not even from the spine whacks, the liner engages just before the middle of the 5/32 thick tang. Oh yea, the blade is 5/32 inch thick, very stout. Do yourself a favor, get the military, but get the newer version, not the old version.

My Military seems every bit as solid in the hilt as my REKAT Carnivore. I have had, and anticipate, no trouble with flexing or any other sign of weakness.

I got mine with very little examination at the store,(I wanted to try out 440V REAL bad!) when I got home, I was aghast that the knife had only one steel liner in the handle and remained unsure that I made a wise choice for a couple of days. Well after careful scrutiny and examination my confidence began to build. The locking liner is VERY strong, the handle has more than adequate stiffness, the lockup is quite solid and all of this gave me confidence enough to try the dreaded "Spine Whack Test". I went out to the work bench and beat the stuffing out of it and that lock held like it was welded in place. The Military has made me a convert and I am now a big fan. Buy it and try it, you'll like it.

I ran over mine with the tractor in the yard and there was no problem, except the dirt that was forced into the pivot area. Cleaned the knofe up and that Military is just as good as ever. If mine can take that sort of thing, I wouldn't wory about the back pocket.

I picked up an older ATS-34 bladed Military and I was concerned about the strength and flex issue, but it is SOLID. I am amazed at how stiff the G-10 is without some support from from steel. Spyderco wouldn't put a knife like this out on the market, call it the Military, and have it be a flop. Name is well deserved to those in the armed forces.

Only ONE flaw that I can see: they don't sell a LEFT-HANDED model ......LOL. You reading this Sal

I have to keep plugging for the strictly LEFT-HANDED models, or a totally ambidexterous design. Thanks for making products and standing behind them 100%.

God knows I love my Military, I have the 440V plain edge. The lock has never failed me in the 7 months that I've owned mine. I've never abused it, but it's been used quite frequently. Buy one, you will never regret it. If you don't like it I'll buy it from you.

Dear Military owners,
I know this is not a place to sell or advertise but could you tell me via email what is the best place to purchase the Military online? I need LOW prices and a reliable place to purchase it from. I've had trouble in the past with poor customer service. I thought I was getting scamed. Anyway, thanks ahead of time.

Spirex,

If you're asking for advice on what dealer to buy from this is an excellent place to ask about the where to buy the Military. I plan to buy from abc-direct unless I hear of a better place.

Military owners,

Thanks for all of the endorsements of your knives. I expected mixed reviews but it sounds like an awsome knife. I didn't know they came in ATS-34 though. I guess I have to look at the specs better. I assume CPM 440V is the better choice. Do I have to specifiy when I order, or is the ATS-34 no longer made?

At one point, Top of Texas Knives had ATS-34 new model Militaries for a very good price. My choice was for the CPM440V as it seemed to be tougher in resisting breakage and, despite DannyC's problems, holds an edge wonderfully.

They are available in ATS-34 and CPM440V. As far as I can tell the ATS-34 is serrated only.

Nope, the new generation ATS-34 Military comes in plain edge also, which is the model I have. I have had no flex problems whatsoever. Can't wait for that rolling lock.

I hope I'm not treading on anybody's toes (I'm new here), but the best price I've seen for the military is at www.cutleryshoppe.com

This is the CPM 440V version. I'm a little unclear as to which blade type is the new version.

Hugh,

What I got was one in a million, most probably.. it's a lemon, which is to say Spyderco isn't perfect. But that didn't deter me from getting another Military and a Starmate, both in 440V, because I know that the good ones will definitely cut like hell.
And I know they take good care of their customers, which boosted my confidence on their products a lot more.
