A full size Griptilian.... I finally did it. - UPDATE-

Hey Mike, congrats on the upgrade. :)
You need to invest in a set of Wilkins Grips, I'll be picking up a set in the next couple weeks. They really do take the knife to a whole new level of comfort and it it just plain looks cool.

Thanks Charlie. You are right, I do need to pull the trigger on some Wilkins.
I've been looking at them for quite awhile, but just haven't been able to bring myself to do it yet. I know it probably sounds odd but I've been carrying and using Mini Grips for so long, I actually think the factory scales are part of what appeals to me about them. They are very comfortable and damn near impossible to break.

Another member that I started chatting with on a semi-regular basis after doing some trading, graciously offered to send me a couple of his knives to try out. One has Wilkins Ti scales and another has basic black G10. While I greatly appreciate the offer, I just feel uncomfortable borrowing things.
I told him if I actually follow through with it and for some odd reason don't like them, I'll make him a smokin deal on them :D

Thanks. I think you would be very happy with it if you get one. Nothing wrong with BM's 154...
I really like the sand colored scales too, and can see picking up a few more. I only have one other with sand colored scales. It is an early 555 Mini with the oval hole that I was fortunate enough to do some swapping with another member for

I had thought about ordering a Cabelas D2 with sand colored scales, but I still haven't warmed up to the change in the texturing on the Cabelas versions.

I have been carrying a 550HG now for quite a few years and am very pleased with BM 154CM. So I am not too concerned with having another steel. Would love to give N680 a try though but not too concerned.

I have found myself drawn to the 551 with sand coloured handle and recently held a 550HG in Olive Drab. The olive drab really surprised me but the sand remains my favorite.

I've never tried the N680. I would be curious to see how it performs. In all honesty I'm not much of a steel junkie. It's nice having choices, but for years I was perfectly happy with BM's 440C, and still like the steel. Besides, I actually enjoy sharpening my knives, so if the edge doesn't last quite as long as some other steels, I really don't mind. Heck, sometimes I work on them when they really don't need it :D

The OD is a nice choice.

I can hook you up with a red set of wilkins grips if you decide you want some!

Thanks, I appreciate the offer.

Well I guess it is only fair to give an update on my first full size Griptilian.... I sold it lol :D

It is truly a great knife. Very solid, and fits my hands very nicely. Maybe I would have bonded with it better if I hadn't been using Minis since they were first released. They just feel natural.

I've carried my Minis in the watch pocket of my Wranglers for many years. They fit perfectly, and I've never had one come out. The larger Grip fits the watch pocket, but it doesn't have the same secure feeling, and it does protrude further out of the pocket, although in all honesty it isn't horrible. I could definitely feel it when sitting down though, unlike the Mini.

I really can't say anything bad about the full size, it is just different than what I am use to.

.

I did the same thing awhile back and regretted it.

Now I got lucky and traded a Endura for a 550 combo.

Cant wait for it to arrive and have a Grip in my hands again.

The grip was my first non-sub-$100 purchase into knifeworld (bought the orange h2o). Never carried it because of the stupid scales. Just a few days ago got awt scales for it (thanks to this forum). Now it's my favorite knife. Giving the original scales to a guy on this forum who wanted them.

I just got my first mini while my two full sizes are off at Benchmade, a satin 556. I really like it. I don't think it'll be my last. When my bigger two come back I don't know how I'm going to choose which one to grab every day.
