I am under the impression that Schreger lines angles vary depending on their location, so if you only have a little bit of them visible they cannot tell all the truth. If you compare whole sections then they can be read and distinguished.
I'm not so sure about this, I have measured the angles of Schreger lines in hundreds of pieces and found them to be dependable. I am sure someone can come up with some ivory that is less concrete though.
Thank you Mark, you are the expert! I bet you could tell it even with your eyes closed, just by smell https://pocketdentistry.com/2-tusks-and-ivory/
In this link you can check what i'm talking about. While the complete section is easily identifyiable as elephant, if you only have a small section of the inner part you can find more acute chevrons there and have some doubts.
It is possible i am still looking at it the wrong way and that even with small pieces there would be a way to tell for sure elephant from white mammoth interior.
