A.G. Russell B&T what else compares?

Mr. Russell,

I apologize for posting my assumption. I was told by a friend, who owns the Deer Hunter and B&T models, that they were bead-blasted. Remind me to properly educate him. If you don't mind sharing, what is the "finish type" on those blades (I didn't see it listed on the website)? Thanks.

Regards,
3G

That is a satin finish. We have used bead blast finish on some large military knives but never on knives that might be sued for food. all the best, A. G.

thanks for the input.

Thank you, Mr. Russell. Sorry, once again, for my mistake. I very much enjoy your designs, products, catalogs, and service. You constantly raise the bar!

Regards,

Thanks again everyone for the replies.

I've ordered the A.G. Russell Bird & Trout (D2) along with the optional upside down sheath.

I'll let you know what I think when it arrives.

My AG Russell D2 Bird and Trout arrived. Here are my initial thoughts.

It is a very light knife. The handle feels especially light.
I like the button lock sheath. I also got the upside down button lock sheath and it is comfortable to wear as a neck knife.

The knife was reasonably sharp out of the box, not quite shaving sharp. It took a bit of work on the Sharpmaker but now it is as sharp as my Spyderco Moran (the sharpest out of the box I’ve ever received)

Yesterday I used it to prepare a stir fry. It performed very well. Because of the shorter blade it isn’t as nice slicing and dicing as a chef’s knife. The AG Russell Deerhunter would probably do better for general kitchen duty.

When I was out at the grocery store this morning the seafood dept. had some nice looking rainbow trout swimming around in their tank so I decided to bring a couple home for supper and see how the knife worked on fish.

I like cooking my fish whole so I only gutted and gilled them. This is where I like a bit shorter blade for better control and it did an excellent job.

I also cut up some lemons and the blade did not discolor at all so I’m not really sure if corrosion will be much of an issue with D2 steel if cared for reasonably.

Overall I think the knife and sheath are a nice package and a good value.

And hopefully Lavan won’t be upset for me using an “outdoors” knife, indoors in the kitchen.:D

Glad you like the knife. I think of the DH and BT as two of the best knives I ever designed. I think they rank with the Featherlite. I think that when we have them in the new sheath with a balistic cloth belt loop they will sell again as they did at first. all the best, A. G.
